A good show and great intermediate tutorial, February 7, 2005
This review is from: Mamady Keita: (DVD)
The concept behind this CD is wonderful. If you find the nearly hidden link to instruction and select one of the several rhythms, you will encounter a picture of the band with links to each member. You then select Djembe 1, Djembe 2, or the bellwork and drum pattern for Dunuba, Kenkeni, Sangba. Nothing is slowed down--but you can study how each master plays the instrument in isolation for as long as you want. I got my money's worth just watching the Djembe players' hand placement. When you get tired and need inspiration, you can see the ensemble together with or without Mamady's solos.
Why a 4 and not a 5 rating? The bell patterns are not recorded that brightly and the hands often blur even on slow motion. I think you should ideally combine these DVD's with Mamady Keita's book of Malinke Rhythms, which shows drum and bell patterns. Plus the wonderful introduction and background for each piece plays EVERY time you select it. I am very tired of fast forwarding past my (n + 1) explanation of Guinean circumcision songs. On the other hand, the DVD is worth the price just for the shows, and it will give intermediate students information they would find nowhere else. For you, it may very well be a five.
