As the child and family photographer behind janeenkelley.com photography, I can honestly say that I've bought EVERY child photography book out there. Like many women, my passive interest in photography sky-rocketed with the birth of my first child, so many of these books were purchased with the sole intent of taking the best photos possible of my little monkey. Of these, I can't say one or two didn't dole out a decent piece of advice here or there, but the information was mostly topical, discussing subjects like filling the frame and using the rule of thirds. For the most part, I felt that I'd paid $18-$25 for a book of information I could have gotten for free on the internet (albiet, with a little digging). Overall, I was left uninspired. Then I found this book! And while I admit I purchased it more out of professional curiosity, I can say that being pleasently suprised doesn't quite sum up how impressive this book is, all the way around.

Of all the books streaming along the bottom of this page in the 'similar items' category, this is the book you should buy. Why? For one it's literally PACKED with information--nearly 300 pages worth-- is rich with beautiful, inspiring, full color photos, and shares the camera settings and best ways to acheive what you see on the page. The book contains enough information that a more experienced photographer will find useful, but does so in a way that doesn't intimidate the newbie, which is a major plus. It also gives a fresh and modern take on what's happeneing in the photography world right now.

As photography does follow it's trends, I've found the many of the other books used images that many would consider 'dated' and generally old fashioned in feel (and not in the cool vintage-y way) which contributed to my overall feeling of being bamboozled. But don't be misled into thinking this book is simply trend either. Rather, imagine the analogy of stainless steel to kitchen appliances. Sure it's hot right now, but it will also never really go out of style either! The ideas are classic and fresh and totally inspire you to go out and shoot, believing that your photos can capture the same magic and wonder. As a side note, I was also suprised and super excited to find that throughout the book we're treated to tips and tricks from well known and respected photographers in the field. How cool to browse through the pages and find brief interviews with photographers whose work I've been following on blogs for years now! Overall, this book is inspiring and fun and a must read for every mom (even if it does wind up putting me out of business)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely AND informative!, May 2, 2011
This review is from: Mamarazzi: Every Mom's Guide to Photographing Kids (Paperback)
What a well-written, friendly, and beautiful book! It's pretty enough to leave out on a coffee table, lighthearted enough for a fun read, but also includes plenty of "tech support" for those Mamarrazis/Mamarazzos? who want to learn more about shutter speeds, lens choices, etc.

The author clearly enjoys her subjects and the included photos are not only beautifully composed, but also capture the whimsy of childhood. Parenting often happens at a frenetic pace, but this book helped to remind me that we can, in fact, freeze time. I'll be taking lots more photos as a result and am composing the perfect "belly button" shot in my head right this second.

Great gift idea too!

Book is good companion for moms and dads who just discovered their interest in photography.

It is written in manner that no previous knowledge about photography is necessary. Basics are explained without going too much into technical details.

Great number of pictures are provided throughout the book as examples or portfolio for those who are just looking for inspiration.

I would say that this book is not targeted for advanced amateurs or professionals who already have experience working with DSLR.

Mamarazzi does an excellent job of simply breaking down all the ins & outs of photographing your children without all of the confusing technical mumbo-jumbo. Its easy to read and has great examples throughout. Plus, it has helped build my confidence by giving me great tips & ideas to snap the perfect photo. Lots of info in a fun, easy to read format. I still needed to consult with my owner's manual to learn specifics on some things, but all that I wanted to learn about lighting, ect. is in this book. Inspiring photos, great ideas, and technical information for the mama that just wants to get good photos of her little ones. I highly recommend this book.
