Great teaching opportunity,
By Armchair Interviews (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mama's Milk (Hardcover)
Michael Elsohn Ross' book, Mama's Milk, provides parents and caretakers a wonderful opportunity to discuss how and why mothers nurse their babies. The stories are told in a comforting rhyme and celebrate breastfeeding and the bonding that results.
The author begins with a human mother cuddling her child and nursing and continues with pigs, horses, monkeys, elephants, bats, otters and on and on. At the back of the book there are individual pictures of the different animals and facts about them in conjunction with nursing. I learned a lot. The illustrations are lovely and contribute greatly to the message. Not only will your child learn about mothers feeding their offspring, but the animal illustrations provide a great opportunity to learn to identify animals. Armchair Interviews says: If you have a new baby and have older siblings, Mama's Milk is a great tool for learning, understanding and embracing the importance of mother's milk.

Gorgeous Book, Must-Have for AP Parents!,

This review is from: Mama's Milk (Hardcover)
This book celebrates how beautiful and natural breastfeeding is...even for humans! My children were delighted to see beautiful pictures of a mom cuddling and nursing a baby in bed, nursing on a park bench, and wearing baby in a sling. They exclaimed, "It's like us!" And the way the book connects nursing with snuggling and cuddling in all creatures is gorgeous. As an added bonus, there are little nursing facts about different animals at the book (like a father coyote takes care of feeding a nursing mother coyote and how elephants nurse up to five years!) It gives you the names of animals and their babies, the names of their homes, etc. too, so very educational to boot! Gorgeous, beautiful book full of love and natural beauty!

Beautiful book!,

My nursing toddler son and I LOVE this book! The drawings are beautiful, the story is sweet, and we learned a lot about other nursing mammals! Brian's favorites-- the nursing puggles (platypus babies) and the fact that kangaroos make pink milk. This book gets a lot of cuddles, sweet milky smiles, and of course ends in a good night nurse.

great, non-nipply nursing book,

I love finding books that normalize breastfeeding to children, but a lot of them are too "nipply" to me -- as natural as it is, and as much as I might nurse a baby in public without a care, I don't like the books with nipples all over the pages. Maybe I just feel self-conscious if someone else should see the books, or maybe it's just me being prudishly American. Regardless, this book is quite tastefully done. Even those who think babies should be nursed under a cover and only until they are 6mo old couldn't object to it.
Wish it was a boardbook, as most kids who are nursing are still ripping up paper pages, but it's a high quality printing on thicker than average paper.

I got this book for my son, almost 20 months, to help prepare him to see me nursing his new baby brother (due in a month) -- I had to exclusively pump for my older little guy, so he doesn't have any memory of nursing.
The illustrations are just adorable! There are human families (of all ethnicities), as well as animals both familiar (cats, horses) and a little less usual (platypuses, bats). My son loves looking at the pictures and having me name the various animals (or trying to name them himself ... he gets a little confused sometimes, though, and thinks the kangaroos are dogs ...) It's great to see a book that shows breastfeeding as normal and natural. We have a couple of "we're having a new baby" books for my son, and I've been disappointed in how they both show the babies drinking bottles. This is a nice counterpoint.

Great book for your little nursling,

My daughter absolutely loves nursing while I read this book to her. She really enjoys seeing other babies (humans and animals) nursing. She is able to relate with all the pictures, and points out the mommies and babies. It is a favorite for when she needs some quiet time with mommy. I highly recommend this book to nursing moms, especially those nursing toddlers.

Sweet and Educational,
This review is from: Mama's Milk/Mama Me Alimenta (Paperback)
This book is very sweet. It has lovely illustrations, and my daughter enjoys having this book read to her. As a note, the Spanish words are not translated exactly from the English, but instead are written poetically, so they have a slightly different meaning. Both the English and Spanish texts are really very nice. What a great book to instill in a child the sweetness, normalcy, and wonder of breastfeeding!

This is a MUST have!,

This book is beautiful, informative and fun. This is a breastfeeding mother's must have book for her children of any age. One of my favorite perks of this book is the end where there are tidbits of information about breastfeeding in both animals and people. My 4 year old son loves to point out all the nursing animals and so does my 3 year old. The pictures are bright, colorful and keep your child's focus. We read this multiple times a night because my kids can't get enough of the cute nursing animals and baby's alike.
Even my husband enjoys this children's book! I am so glad I bought this, we are taking very good care of this book so that we can hand it down generation to generation. A+!

My son was a little young for this book when we got it. He is starting to enjoy it more now at 18 months. The pictures are sweet and we like that it is bi-lingual.

My toddler loves this book and so do I!,
By Denise "Proud Nursing Mama" (Chino, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mama's Milk/Mama Me Alimenta (Paperback)
My daughter is 27 months and still nursing. She loves to read this book with me and see pictures of other babies and toddlers nursing and then to see that the animals nurse too - from land, to trees, and even in the ocean.
The illustrations are great and it is a good quality book. The story is pleasant and rhymes a bit. A lot of thought was put into this book and it reads well. I have bought several books about nursing and extended nursing and so far, this is the best quality book I have found. Also, at the end there are little facts about how long each animal nurses and found this very interesting. Elephants nurse for 2-5 years! Something I did not know :) I think it's important for mom's who are practicing extended nursing to be reminded that it's such a natural and wonderful thing and important too for the toddler to see other children thier age nursing as well. It helps to balance out some of the negative things we see in our culture or hear from well meaning friends and family. Enjoy! |
