Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–From humans to a variety of aquatic and land animals, Ross's rhyming text describes the different ways that mothers nurse their babies. Presented across spreads or on single pages framed by white borders, the pastel-infused watercolor illustrations tastefully depict the nursing pairs. Each species is identified along with the proper nomenclature for its offspring (monkey and infant, bat and pup, whale and calf). Short factual statements about the highlighted animals are appended–kangaroos have pink milk; elephant calves nurse for two to five years; bear cubs drink from hibernating mothers; human milk helps protect babies from disease. This cozy offering will be welcomed by parents who want to share the joy and naturalness of breastfeeding with their children.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI

4.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching opportunity April 17, 2007
Format:Hardcover
Michael Elsohn Ross' book, Mama's Milk, provides parents and caretakers a wonderful opportunity to discuss how and why mothers nurse their babies. The stories are told in a comforting rhyme and celebrate breastfeeding and the bonding that results.

The author begins with a human mother cuddling her child and nursing and continues with pigs, horses, monkeys, elephants, bats, otters and on and on. At the back of the book there are individual pictures of the different animals and facts about them in conjunction with nursing. I learned a lot.

The illustrations are lovely and contribute greatly to the message. Not only will your child learn about mothers feeding their offspring, but the animal illustrations provide a great opportunity to learn to identify animals.

Armchair Interviews says: If you have a new baby and have older siblings, Mama's Milk is a great tool for learning, understanding and embracing the importance of mother's milk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book, Must-Have for AP Parents! January 25, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This book celebrates how beautiful and natural breastfeeding is...even for humans! My children were delighted to see beautiful pictures of a mom cuddling and nursing a baby in bed, nursing on a park bench, and wearing baby in a sling. They exclaimed, "It's like us!" And the way the book connects nursing with snuggling and cuddling in all creatures is gorgeous. As an added bonus, there are little nursing facts about different animals at the book (like a father coyote takes care of feeding a nursing mother coyote and how elephants nurse up to five years!) It gives you the names of animals and their babies, the names of their homes, etc. too, so very educational to boot! Gorgeous, beautiful book full of love and natural beauty!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book! February 17, 2008
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My nursing toddler son and I LOVE this book! The drawings are beautiful, the story is sweet, and we learned a lot about other nursing mammals! Brian's favorites-- the nursing puggles (platypus babies) and the fact that kangaroos make pink milk. This book gets a lot of cuddles, sweet milky smiles, and of course ends in a good night nurse.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, non-nipply nursing book July 1, 2008
By ...
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love finding books that normalize breastfeeding to children, but a lot of them are too "nipply" to me -- as natural as it is, and as much as I might nurse a baby in public without a care, I don't like the books with nipples all over the pages. Maybe I just feel self-conscious if someone else should see the books, or maybe it's just me being prudishly American. Regardless, this book is quite tastefully done. Even those who think babies should be nursed under a cover and only until they are 6mo old couldn't object to it.

Wish it was a boardbook, as most kids who are nursing are still ripping up paper pages, but it's a high quality printing on thicker than average paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars pretty good April 9, 2011
By LKS
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My 2 yr old son is absolutely obsessed with my breasts. He was breastfed as a baby. He is constantly trying to reach down my shirt and asks "What are those?" When I am getting ready to shower, he races to the bathroom to try to get a glimpse of me naked. He's grabbed at them and tries to make them jiggle. I know that this is kind of normal behavior for a curious little boy, but it was making me self-conscious. I ordered this book to properly educate him about what breasts are for, i.e. "Mommies have breasts for feeding babies," and to hopefully quell some of the curiosity. We've only read it a few times, but it has actually helped. He doesn't try to grab them as much or reach under my shirt as often (often, being the operative word). I guess boys will be boys. The book is quite tastefully done. I feel like it's a good resource for other moms like me, with curious little boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too cute! November 27, 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this book for my son, almost 20 months, to help prepare him to see me nursing his new baby brother (due in a month) -- I had to exclusively pump for my older little guy, so he doesn't have any memory of nursing.

The illustrations are just adorable! There are human families (of all ethnicities), as well as animals both familiar (cats, horses) and a little less usual (platypuses, bats). My son loves looking at the pictures and having me name the various animals (or trying to name them himself ... he gets a little confused sometimes, though, and thinks the kangaroos are dogs ...)

It's great to see a book that shows breastfeeding as normal and natural. We have a couple of "we're having a new baby" books for my son, and I've been disappointed in how they both show the babies drinking bottles. This is a nice counterpoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for your little nursling January 13, 2009
By Allison
Format:Paperback
My daughter absolutely loves nursing while I read this book to her. She really enjoys seeing other babies (humans and animals) nursing. She is able to relate with all the pictures, and points out the mommies and babies. It is a favorite for when she needs some quiet time with mommy. I highly recommend this book to nursing moms, especially those nursing toddlers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, poor translations January 28, 2011
Format:Paperback
My daughter loves to read this book and look at the pictures. The illustrations are well done and the variety of different animals makes the book fun. The English story line rhymes well and has a good flow. The problem arises when you look into the Spanish story line. The Spanish sentences do not correlate to the English sentences in most of the pages. On the first story page the Spanish translation is not at all the same as the written English. The Spanish story line may be sufficient for a fluent home that can explain the differences in phrasing and meaning, but not for the classic "gringo" household. I find the book worthless from bilingual perspective.

Good thing this book was a gift as I would not recommend it for English speaking parents trying to introduce some Spanish into their household.
