This is is a fine book devoted to famillar mammals of the US and Canada. It shows full-color illustrations and maps that show you where the specific critter lives for many different mammals. Plus it tells you what a specific mammal eats and wether it is dangerous or not. A must for all nature-lovers !

This little book is certainly easy to use. If you know what kind of mammal you are looking at and where in North America you are, you have a good chance of identifying it. The drawings are probably more attractive to children than they are to those of us who are longer in the tooth. There are at least a couple of ommissions which makes it disappointing. The short accompanying texts are, by necessity, very limited in their scope. It might be a good starting point but very quickly makes the reader hungry for more detailed information.

How many fourth grade science reports have been written out of these little books by Zim? Back in the late 1950s (upper pleistocene to most), every kid worth his dinosaurs had a bunch of these nature guides (I lived with "Mammals;" "Reptiles and Amphibians;" "Rocks, Gems and Minerals;" "Fishes;" and "Insects").

"Mammals" is a very handy sized book giving a picture of each U.S. (lower 48) mammal with a painting, short description of habits, reproduction, and range. In the back are found the scientific names (I find this handy as I can never remember them when sitting in front of my computer). Excellent for ages six and up.

I considered "Mammals" good enough to order one for my six-foot-two son to put in his pack. Don't leave home without it!

First read this handy-sized guide as a kid of ten or so. I was fascinated by the illustrations, and spent hours pouring over it. I just picked it up again, after many years. How does it hold up? Pretty well. The illustrations are still fascinating, and the text is easy to read and informative. Any kid (or adult) who wants an easy, quick introduction to North American mammals will probably find this entertaining and useful.

No nature library should be without this book. The cover doesn't matter. The Golden Guide to Mammals is an invaluable springboard book for casual curiosity or the first step into serious research. Every child should have Golden Book guide books scattered around with their Dr Seuss and dinosaur picture books. They can start a life long awareness, if not passion for the wildlife we share our home and country with. No auto trip should begin without a copy of this handy field guide in the glove box, for that animal we just passed on the interstate doing 78 MPH, or that critter that we just glimpsed beyond the campfire. There are few publications with a finer pedigree or a wider range of use.
Hake no mistake, these are not children's books. They are masterfully written for anyone who cares to open the covers. I have worn out a number of copies of this book between my childhood and my recent retirement. I also find they make perfect gifts.
And if you already live in the country, don't leave home without it. They are a natural extension to a road map.

A bit out of date but still gives good, accurate informations on the mammals of North America. I have used this book since I was a kid in New York City and when I moved with my family to the Hudson Valley south of Albany and found it most useful. I wanted a hardcover library edition an it's larger print is nice for my older eyes.

I'm currently collecting these Golden Guide nature books for my boy because they are what I grew up with. They are a bit dated but I love the artwork and the information is still quite pertinent. I hope to have the full collection before he turns 4. I just love these books.

6 year loves this books. They are a good size for her and with lots of pictures. She uses the book to identify animals in our yard and has surprised me with how well she can find exactly the right animal.
