Book Description

For over a century, the Indomalayan region has been recognized as one of the world's major zoogeographical regions. Comprising southeastern Asia from Pakistan and southern China to Indonesia and the Philippines, the area is home to over 1,000 mammalian species -- more than a fifth of the world's total population. But until now, this region's rich fauna of mammals has never been documented in one major, easily accessible reference work. This volume, written by two leading authorities, fills that gap by providing a comprehensive guide to mammal identification in the form of tabulations of the features of all families, genera, and species; illustrations of key physical characteristics; maps and documentation of the geographical ranges for all living species in the region; and revised classification based on a critical assessment of the most up-to-date research, including biochemical taxonomy. A complete listing of the scientific nomenclature of the region's mammals (with over 8,000 names) and a complete bibliography (which includes references to approximately 3,000 data sources) round out this indispensable reference. This exhaustive volume will be welcomed by academic and field researchers in zoogeography, tropical forestry, agriculture and environmental medicine, as well as by professionals working in museums, zoos, and conservation organizations.

Review

'A mammoth work ... this book provides a major advance in the understanding of the mammal fauna of the region' Bat News, No. 28, January, 1993

'It will be an invaluable reference work, providing a major advance in the understanding of the mammal fauna of a very rich region.' A.M. Hutson, Oryx, Vol. 27, No. 2, April 1993

'nothing in taxonomy is ever fixed in perpetuity ... certainly The Mammals of the Indomalayan region is unlikely to be superseded in the foreseeable future ... I shall value my copy of The Mammals of the Indomalayan Region not merely as an invaluable work of reference ... but also as a magnificent expression of the fundamental human need to classify the rich variety of nature as a precondition of understanding it.' Nicholas Gould, International Zoo News, No. 244, Vol. 40/3

'this is an imposing treatise that offers a wealth of information including many unresolved questions ... It can be recommended as a basic guideline, upon which future improvements can be made.' D. Kruska, Zeitschrift fur Saugetierkunde, Band 58, Heft 4

'Both authors ... have made a concerted effort to review the literature critically ... this is an imposing treatise that offers a wealth of information including many unresolved questions,. It can be recommended as a basic guideline.' Zeitschrift fur Saugetierkunde, Band 58, Heft 4

4.0 out of 5 stars An Impressive Overview, June 11, 2004
This review is from: The Mammals of the Indomalayan Region: A Systematic Review (Hardcover)
This book is a singular one that it covers the mammalian fauna of the entire vast oriental region (the Indian Subcontinent & South-East Asia including South China and Indonesia as far east as the Moluccas) in a single volume.
Given its scope, details had to be kept to a minimum. It is basically a checklist covering nomenclature, range, regional variation (subspecies), and sometimes essential features distinguishing similar species. A basic distribution map is provided for most species, though drawings illustrate only a few, so this is obviously more of a reference than a field guide.
It is particularly useful for regions like much of Indonesia, whose fauna is yet to be dealt with in detail in any separate book.
Unfortunately, with all the recent discovery of "new" mammal species in various parts of the region, this book is no longer truly comprehensive and an updated edition would be very welcome.
