2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
You may want to buy this if you are interested in the development of modern folkloric music, and it may be enjoyable to listen to if you don't know the languages being sung. However, if you know Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian, I wouldn't recommend it. I find it disconcerting that the lyrics are not set to the music according to the natural rhythm of the words. It...

I love the music, the voices and the raw power of grown women on disply.
Rich colors, textures, emotions, language.

No waifs here.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can get your hands on a copy, don't miss it!, June 18, 2004
This review is from: Mammas (Audio CD)
Mammas are great! I have hundreds of CDs, and I pull this one out and listen to it frequently--great for the highway, too. It's hard to believe this CD has been so overlooked and allowed to go out of print. The music is an exhilarating blend of Eastern and European flavors and the passions of four women from divers regions.

One may find fault with the music for one reason or another, but the voices alone warrant five stars and a serious listen, especially (for me) the rich, vibrant, and powerful voice of Italian singer Lucilla Galeazz. Her voice you can can also be heard on the more traditional "La Tarantella: Antidotum Tarantulae." She also appears on another Phillipe Eidel production, the excellent "Renaissance: Les sonnets de Michel-ange" (Naive), evidently not available on Amazon US (though it is available at Amazon Canada).

If you can get a copy of "Mammas," don't miss this beautiful CD!

My only regret with this albumn is that I can't sing along. The melodies and vocal harmonies leave me wishing to learn a new language, just to join in.

It seemed an interesting but ultimately failed experiment at cross-cultural pollination; a mish-mash rather than a harmony. For me, this album certainly didn't live up to the rave reviews of previous reviewers.
