Book Description

April 2003
Mammograms & Mastectomies is an easy-to-read story filled with practical information and insight into the personal and professional implications of breast cancer. Susan Farrell skillfully combines humor and advice as she covers the challenges of dealing with doctors, learning the language of cancer diagnosis and treatment, formulating the right questions and researching surgical options. She goes on to discuss how to tell the children, managing the news at work and the struggle to resume a normal life. On a deeper level, she offers valuable insights into the personal and professional traumas and triumphs that accompany this all too common health problem. An estimated 192,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in the U.S. alone (American Cancer Society) and breast cancer will affect one in eight women in their lifetimes. From overwhelming anxiety to the determination to heal and thrive in the wake of a mastectomy, this book serves as a welcome companion to those whose lives are suddenly interrupted by disease.

Mammograms & Mastectomies is the story of a Type-A, career woman who had successfully managed husband, children and promotions on two continents - until it all came crashing down around her with the news that she had breast cancer. It is a triumph of humor over adversity; a tale of spiritual re-awakening. It is an acceptance that destiny will follow its own path, coupled with the conviction that one can, nonetheless, influence the outcome. It is told by a woman thankful that cancer invaded her existence so that she might be re-born.

About the Author

Born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1950, Susan Farrell graduated with an Economics degree from Brown University in 1972 and moved to Belgium to join a consulting firm specialized in strategic planning. While living and working in Brussels, Susan earned her MBA from Boston University at night.

After six years in Europe, Susan moved to New Orleans and joined the energy industry, beginning a twenty-three year adventure of working and traveling throughout Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

She married an academic whose flexibility allowed her to aggressively pursue her career, keep the household together and manage two daughters. The family moved to London with Susan in 1994 and finally back to Houston in 1998. But, in January 2000, Susan’s world fell apart. Her executive position with a giant multi-national was eliminated in a re-organization and a month later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Life had stopped being cooperative. The ability to find humor in any situation is a coping mechanism which Susan has used throughout her life, often shocking friends and colleagues with irreverent comments. This knack of discovering, or creating, wit in seemingly dismal circumstances became a lifeline for Susan during her ordeal with cancer. The other lifeline for Susan in her struggle with illness was prayer. Like many who have confronted life-threatening events, Susan embarked upon a slow, and often reticent, re-discovery of her spiritual self. Susan still lives in Houston and is a Senior Director for an energy consultancy. She is currently three years cancer-free, healthy, and once again feisty. She is also enormously thankful that she was forced to re-examine her values.

This review is from: Mammograms and Mastectomies: Facing Them With Humor and Prayer (Paperback)
This book is a must-read for every woman concerned about breast cancer. The author expresses every patient's frustrations with her diagnosis, variety of treatment options, and recovery. She also covers very useful subjects such as how to tell your children about cancer and what to say to co-workers before and after surgery. An upbeat, optimistic story of how one woman rediscovered family, friends and faith while dealing with a serious illness.
