Bravo! Whereas this book does not go into great depth in evaluating individual conspiracy theories, it is an indispensible index in the library of those not easily fooled by surreptitious explanations of murders in the public forum. I was really excited to get this book and read it. It came before the estimated date and was in good condition. However, the actual book is not that good, just ok. Bravo! Whereas this book does not go into great depth in evaluating individual conspiracy theories, it is an indispensible index in the library of those not easily fooled by surreptitious explanations of murders in the public forum. What's more, it serves another purpose. In bringing all of them together in one place one can see a remarkable consistency in many of them.

For example, the most credible case for the JFK cover-up JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters presents compelling evidence the CIA orchestrated the JFK assassination to head off his intent to pull out of Vietnam. Likewise, the most credible case for the John Paul I assassination Murder in the Vatican: The CIA and the Bolshevik Pontiff presents much more than compelling proof the CIA orchestrated his murder when he moved to give financial (arms) support to revolutionaries in Central America who were fighting an uphill struggle against the coalition of the United States and ruling juntas.

Even for those who have spent a lifetime preoccupied with one or more of these cover-ups as I have, The Mammoth Book of Cover-Ups: The 100 Most Terrifying Conspiracies of All Time reveals great similarity in many of them. Start with this book as it raises the questions. Then go on to the others for the answers.

I was really excited to get this book and read it. It came before the estimated date and was in good condition. However, the actual book is not that good, just ok. Basically, it is a summary of commom conspiracy theories in two-four page incriments. The information can be found anywhere and the author seemed biased toward disproving many of the conspiracy theories. Although theories are just that - not proven - I did not expect a bias toward either way. However. more of a slant toward believing the theories would have been a nice twist for someone who believes in UFO's like me. I will probably not finish reading it and may give it to someone else if they are interested. Crystal

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing much new here., July 26, 2008
This review is from: The Mammoth Book of Cover-Ups: The 100 Most Terrifying Conspiracies of All Time (Paperback)
Being a world news hound I find that most every story in this book to be familiar. Some of the presentations are interesting but on the whole it was a large book of old news. If one is unfamiliar with conspiracy theories, past and present, the fascinating panoply of questions just might make a good read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat enjoyable even though author is generally biased against Conspiracies, December 8, 2011
This review is from: The Mammoth Book of Cover-Ups: The 100 Most Terrifying Conspiracies of All Time (Paperback)
I was very interested in reading this book because the cover and back summary had me thinking it was going to examine the possibilities of these common conspiracies. As I read it I could clearly see the author's distaste for "the mill of ultra-right-wing conspiracy theorists". Even though I am not one of those people, I feel that if he is going to "grade" these stories on a 1-10 scale, he needs to provide non-biased information so that his readers can make reasonable decisions for themselves.
Examples of biased views:

The author is convinced the Moon Landing Conspiracy is bogus and says "Apollo 11, of course, did go to the moon." Why don't you just say "I have no proof it did or did not go so I will believe what the media shows me on TV."?

The author is also clearly convinced that 9/11 was as the media claims it to be and states "The rest is history, not conspiracy theory." His evidence for that is the government's own 911 commisson report and government-paid experts, so of course they don't doubt it. (I have been convinced otherwise by information and facts provided by engineers and footage in the Loose Change: the final cut movie. These professionals are not getting paid by the US Government. The most convincing video in there is the CNN video where the (on 9/11) on site journalist reports to CNN that she just got word that building 7 has fallen. Being that the New York skyline is behind her, you can clearly see building 7 behind her in the distance! She goes off camera live before the building actually fell. Clearly suspicious. So who gave her that information, and how did they know it was to fall in a matter of minutes? We may never know.
