Book Description

June 5, 2012
An anthology focusing on newer elements of steampunk, one which deconstructs the staples of the genre and expands on them, rather than simply repeating them, with a greater spread both in terms of location and character.

This is steampunk with a modern, post-colonial sensibility. Contributors include: Jeff VanderMeer, Caitlin Kiernan Paul Di Filippo, Mary Robinette Kowal, Jay Lake, Cherie Priest, Cat Rambo, Ekaterina Sedia, Catherynne M. Valente, Genevieve Valentine and many more

Editorial Reviews

Review

Publishers Weekly
"…sure to satisfy even the most jaded steampunk fans and engage newcomers and skeptics… Each story exemplifies steampunk’s knack for critiquing both the past and the present, in a superb anthology that demands rereading."

2.0 out of 5 stars Critical theory for the masses August 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
The back reads, "great steampunk stories confront an uneasy history of oppression--women, races, and classes." It's steampunk for those who like critical theory--which is not really my cup of absinthe. Some stories were okay but the constant (background) moralizing sucked the enjoyment out of reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good steampunk anthology September 27, 2012

A good steampunk anthology. Arrived promptly and in good condition. A few of the stories seemed to me to be a little "not steampunk" - but still a good book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to cliche corner October 19, 2012
By M. King
Format:Kindle Edition
I must have misunderstood steampunk in the few very good novels I've read because I thought I knew what it was.

But this collection of stories has set me straight. Its about airships and lesbians. Lots and lots of airships and lesbians.

The stories, some of which are very well written, blur into one humungous bore fest by the end the the book.

Hours of my life I'll never get back.
