Book Description

May 20, 2004
Award-winning horror editor Stephen Jones presents thirty-six modern masters of the macabre—among them Harlan Ellison, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Paul McAuley, Peter Tremayne, Steve Rasnic Tem, and Ramsey Campbell—in this collection of the very best in vampire fiction which blends sheer horror with dark humor, deadly tenderness with tingling terror. For the classic vampire, as this volume amply shows, the Blood is the Life. So you'll discover throughout these always scary and diversely crafted pages, from Hugh B. Cave's pulp thriller "Stragella" through to Harold Waldrop's bizarre mix of vampire and Nazis in "Der Untergang Des Abendlandesmenschen" and Christopher Fowler's "The Legend of Dracula Reconsidered as a Primetime TV Special." In between lie artful chillers by the likes of Clive Barker, Brian Lumley, R. Chetwynd-Hayes, Robert Bloch and John Burke, along with new and original stories by Niel Gaiman with "Cards from a Vampire Tarot," and Kim Newman with "Andy Warhol's Dracula: anno Dracula 1978–79." You can sink your teeth, too, in F. Paul Wilson's fast-paced thriller "Midnight Mass," Manly Wade Wellman's "Chastel," offering bloody intrigue and adventure with Judge Keith Hilary Pursuivant; and Les Daniel's "Yellow Fog," which features his enigmatic vampire-hero Don Sebastian de Villanueva.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a great anthology, July 10, 2005

This review is from: The Mammoth Book of Vampires (Paperback)
Great collection of stories by a variety of authors; Clive Barker, Robert Bloch, Kim Newman, Bram Stoker, to name a few. I liked "Midnight Mass," best, the story of a priest, a Jew, and vampires, as it brought up some interesting theology questions. I have wondered since I was a kid how Jewish people protect themselves from vampires. What a great story. The best stories, IMHO, were the novellas at the end, "Midnight Mass," "Yellow Fog," and, "Red Reign." There are shorter stories that are great, but the novellas made the book for me. There were only two stories that didn't interest me and I skipped. That's not bad for such a large book, and believe me, it lives up to its name, it is big!

2.0 out of 5 stars Reading with Tequila, October 23, 2009
Each one had at least one twist to the vampire lore that I had never seen before and enjoyed immensely. Unfortunately, while those four stories were exceptional, the remaining 25 were not. While none of the stories were bad, they all seemed to lack something new or different. They failed at grabbing my attention. 75 pages of some of the best vampire fiction I've ever read just isn't enough to carry the rest of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic vampire tales; both alluring and haunting., October 8, 1997
By A Customer
This collection contains some of the best known writers in the genre: Clive Barker, Brian Lumley, Ramsey Campbell, Robert Bloch, Edgar Allen Poe, Richard Christian Matheson, Graham Masterton, Melanie Tem and Basil Cooper. Most of these tales are modern-day although there are a few classics peppered throughout. The Mammoth Book of Vampires represents the variety of tales and legends to its fullest extent.
