5.0 out of 5 stars Fun simple zombie fare
Another large volume of Zombie comics nicely compiled in one thick tome. Plenty of stories that run only a few pages and get pretty fanciful, not all stories worked or resonated for me but overall this is another bevy of quality zombie tales. One much longer tale, Dead Eyes Open, was pretty entertaining though it certainly does not fit as your normal zombie story...

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price for the amount of stories it offers.
I gave this book three stars because the stories are all in black and white. NO COLOR! The item description at Amazon fails to mention this. So be forewarned! Other than that, the art and the stories themselves are for the most part good. And for the price I think it is worth buying for any zombie fan. My guess is that they produced it in black and white as it is cheaper...

These are tales collected from over the past 20 years with distinctly different art and story telling styles. Despite the book's size I still was able to finish it off in one night. If you are disappointed or don't really like a particular story in here, fear not, there are ample more that will likely draw your interest as you flip through the pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brains, not Brian! Sheesh!, December 22, 2009

18 stories, a little over 450 pages, and an army of zombies - sounds like the pages literally drip a brain-consuming lovechild. And some of the book is great, with the editions to the book making one wonder if things could get better. Sadly, however, there are always the little pieces of the puzzle where the stars do not alig and where one thinks "wow, if only." Still, the book is more than big enough to make up for any little problems.

Stories - Making amends, Pariah, In Sickness, Necrotic: Dead flesh on a Living body, the immortals, Flight from Earth, Amy, black Sabbath, M*A*S*H, Dead Eyes Open, Might of the Living Dead, Job Satisfaction, The Corpse, Haunted Ship, The Zombie, Pigeons from Hell, Zombie World: Dead End, "Zombies."

Each of these has something different to offer, from the campy to the thought-provoking, and most stick to the formula that empowers the dead. I personally like that about zombies - it isn't so much prediction but a knowledge of what you are dealing with. Still, the motions through history and the motions through different pens makes these an interesting selection because, frankly, there are some great voices here. I added the names of all the tales because, if you need to know the who in this, then you can find them easily. And 80% of them will definately hit you in your happy place.

If you want a book of zombie tales, like campy and bloody, and enjoy pulp, get this. It isn't just a hardcore zombie reader's need - it is something that a lot of people like. I have had a few friends borrow it just to read stories from people like Steve Niles, only to find they like a whole lot more.
Good stuff - nice addition to any collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars cool collection!, January 14, 2011

As with all of the 'Mammoth book of...' books, they just can't collect/reprint the true "Best". Do not buy this expecting to find "Kirkman's The walking dead", "Russo's/Avatar's Night+Return of the living dead", "IDW's Zombies!" , "Powell's The Goon" And so on.

This collects some of Steve Niles' Work, and a lot of cool indy Zombie comics Which any Zombie fan should enjoy.

Take it for what it is , a B/W , huge, cheap , collection of a bunch of fun zombie stories! All in all it's a mixed bag of some great, ok, and bad comics, but it is good quality and there are more good stories than bad!

BTW: If you are reading this I would Highly recommend "Zombie Tales" Vol.s 1-4 From 'Boom!' Studios, all color, great quality and stories. An anthology of Zombie Tales!
Also "Fubar" Vol.s 1-2 from 'World Press'. An anthology of Zombie war Tales!

When I first bought this I thought it might be a slightly good zombie comic with a few good stories amongst crap, but I was wrong. Every story is interesting, well told and for the most part kind of a new spin on an old subject. I fully enjoyed. And the book is hugh.

I knew this was in black and white, which is not as good as color in any genre.
But I wanted it anyway. It reprints zombie comics from mainly 2,000 a.d. onward- , but it does have some earlier stuff too. It's just what you'd expect alot of different zombie tales and at the price you pay for this it's more than worth while. ALl the mammoth book of series are in black and white and although I wish they were in color it's still pretty cool to get these mostly pretty cool zombie stories from various artists and writers. Like the other mammoth books none of them are from marvel or d.c. but that's ok, I just wish they'd found more older ones from those magazines or comics. But at this price who cares! And in a little while someone is putting out 'four color fear' which is all in color and features 1950's horror comics! So grab this and any mammoth book because the read is worth the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninteresting, July 13, 2011
Part of the problem may be that I had just finished "The Walking Dead Book 5" and thought this would be a good next thing to read. But I found the comics I read (only half before I decided to stop wasting my time) to be uninteresting. I should say that "Zombie World: Dead End" was alright, but failed to make up for the rest of them. A large problem was that writers failed to establish their world in the short amount of space, but even in the other longer comic "Necrotic: Dead Flesh on a Living Body" the plot just seemed to drag on. Interestingly, I noticed that all the other comics collexions put out by Mammoth claim to be "Mammoth Book of Best ___ Comics" but this one eliminates the "Best." Mebbe they knew what was up?
