Family: Asteraceae (Compositae) (Sunflower family)
Description: Sunflower seeds are easy to grow in direct sun. Sunflowers are annual plants with spectacular yellow and bronze flower blooms.
Planting Instructions: Sow outdoors directly in the garden. Sunflowers grow in most soils. They need to grow their roots deep and wide ,to enable them to withstand strong winds. Thin plants to 2 feet apart and stake the stems to support the large seed heads.
Harvesting: Harvest the seeds after the flower begins to die back and most of the petals have fallen off. Pull out a seed and open it to see if it is full. Cut off the head, leaving a few inches of stalk. Hang the stalks to dry in a well-ventilated area. Do not stack the seed heads in a box because mold can develop easily during the drying process. As soon as the flowers have dried, extract the seeds by rubbing two flower heads together. The seeds should come out fairly easily.
Sunflowers make lovely flower arrangements both as fresh cut flowers or dried flowers.
