Editorial Reviews

This short film documents the American Democracy Project's Stewardship of Public Lands Seminar, a one-week professional development course for college faculty and administrators that takes place annually in Yellowstone National Park.

Mammoth to Mammoth chronicles the experience of three faculty members from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green during the seminar as they study the history, science and politics of some of the major controversies in the Yellowstone ecosystem: snowmobiling, grizzly bears, and bison. They learn about the issues in the classroom and in the field, interviewing local citizens on both sides. The goal of the seminar is to develop insights into how disagreements over the use of public lands might be resolved.

After their firsthand experiences in Yellowstone, the three instructors return to Western Kentucky University to develop programs and courses based on what they've learned. One project that emerges is the creation of a team-taught course that involves issues at their local national park, Mammoth Cave.

The Yellowstone Seminar, like other initiatives in the American Democracy Project, employs both academic and experiential learning to prepare the next generation of Americans to be informed, engaged citizens in our democracy.
