4.0 out of 5 stars A classic from the late 1940s, November 22, 2011
By
This review is from: Man Against Myth (Paperback)
Barrows Dunham was a professor and chairman of the philosophy department at Temple University. He was subpoenaed by HUAC in February, 1953. The administration at Temple University strongly encouraged him to cooperate with the Committee, but he would only give his name, age, and home address before taking the Fifth Amendment. He was charged with contempt of Congress and was put on trial for this but was acquitted in 1955. However, Temple had already fired him, in September 1953. Temple University would eventually overturn this dismissal in 1981, which enabled him to collect his pension from the university.

However, before that happened, Professor Duham had published a brilliant piece of polemical writing, Man Against Myth, in which he used his skills in philosophical argument to systematically examine and refute most of the standard rationales (which he called "social superstitions") that people have given in defense of such things as racism, class inequalities, and other forms of social oppression. Despite the seriousness of the topics that Professor Dunham addressed, his writing is lively and often witty. Despite the passage of almost sixty-five years, most of the content of this book remains relevant. No wonder that people of the stature of Albert Einstein and J. B. S. Haldane were willing to provide blurbs for it.
