Can These Guys Make A Bad Album?,
By
This review is from: Man With the Band (Audio CD)
Actually recorded and released in 1977 'Man With The Band' is important as the time when this band took the word "Band" out of their name and became plain old Fatback. But musically that meant nothing because Fatback just turned up the grooves and throw down the funk BIG TIME!The title track in all it's 10+ minute glory is extrodinary-the bass guitar, bass synth and an early drum machine that sounds a lot like a bass just sticking down as deep into the groove as it can until,in the end that's all you hear."Master Booty" just circumscribes the same idea into a groove that's half as long but still holds the same impact."Funk Backin" adds a tad more melody to the affair with a great pop groove to boot.On "Mile High" Fatback try their hand at disco-fairly straight ahead considering the kind of disco they'd done before this but it works."I Gotta Thing For You" is the only slow jam in the bunch but it nonetheless punches you out anyway. And of course it's right back funk (obviously) with "Midnight Freak" and "Zodiac Man",which is actually pretty retro even for 1977 with it's Sly Stone-like organ and fast tempo. Repeated chants aside Fatback were definately in the Cameo/Bar-Kay's arena of funk chemeleons-able to adapt themselves to new innovations in the genre but never had a problem keeping their footing in firm ground.
