Editorial Reviews

The superb Christopher Plummer plays Flash, a curmudgeon with a hankering for classic movies and booze. Cameron is a volatile teen who commits grand theft auto just because the car is an exact replica from Christine. Their relationship is forged in the darkness of a movie theater and fueled by a mutual appreciation of rebellion and cinema. Cameron enters a student film contest, though he lacks the resources of his peers. Learning that Flash is a retired Hollywood gaffer-and the only surviving crew member from Citizen Kane-Cameron follows him to his home at the Motion Picture Residence for the Elderly, a colony of aging film folk set aside by the industry. A quirky fellowship develops, in which Flash and his friends help Cameron make his film, and, in doing so, change his life.

I saw this movie at an Arts theater some time ago, and had wanted members of my family to enjoy it too. After its home viewing, all agreed on what an outstanding piece this really is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, excellent film..., January 7, 2011
This review is from: Man In The Chair (DVD)
I really enjoyed this indie drama/coming of age story. It's centered around a high school kid who loves movies and is trying to make a film to enter into a competition at his school. He needs guidance and ends up meeting an odd cast of retired and old Hollywood people in a retirement home. Far from famous... this cast of Hollywood rejects (I mean that in a good way... they all seem a little washed up and broken... they were the "little people" of Hollywood so to speak, like one of the main characters Flash who was a lights guy).

Interesting times ensue as the young boy elicits the helps of the retirees to help him make the movie. I found the film itself to be very touching and emotionally heavy, yet still very enjoyable and entertaining to watch. It's also a film that wonderfully examines older people's roles in life as they continue to age, and the cruel disposable way of seeing them that our society has seemed to have adapted at times. Even though it was slightly predictable at times, I found it to be altogether quite a charmer and one that I'd recommend to most out there. 4/5 stars.
