I saw this movie at an Arts theater some time ago, and had wanted members of my family to enjoy it too. After its home viewing, all agreed on what an outstanding piece this really is.

I really enjoyed this indie drama/coming of age story. It's centered around a high school kid who loves movies and is trying to make a film to enter into a competition at his school. He needs guidance and ends up meeting an odd cast of retired and old Hollywood people in a retirement home. Far from famous... this cast of Hollywood rejects (I mean that in a good way... they all seem a little washed up and broken... they were the "little people" of Hollywood so to speak, like one of the main characters Flash who was a lights guy).
Interesting times ensue as the young boy elicits the helps of the retirees to help him make the movie. I found the film itself to be very touching and emotionally heavy, yet still very enjoyable and entertaining to watch. It's also a film that wonderfully examines older people's roles in life as they continue to age, and the cruel disposable way of seeing them that our society has seemed to have adapted at times. Even though it was slightly predictable at times, I found it to be altogether quite a charmer and one that I'd recommend to most out there. 4/5 stars. |
