3.0 out of 5 stars ok book
Well I liked this book to a point. I have an older version of it and the cover art is wonderful.Fabio never looked so good! Also I liked the fiestiness of the characters. They had substance to them. I liked the verbal confrontations between the hero and the heroine. I found the characters to be funny and filled with passion and vulnerable too.

The story has the Hero...

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!!!!, July 18, 2000

This review is from: Man of My Dreams (Paperback)
My first Johanna Lindsay novel was a Malory novel. I have fallen in love with that family and now I can't wait to read more about Ambrose St. James and Megan Penworthy. This book is a must read. Megan's snide remarks and taunting of Devlin had me laughing throughout the book. Especially Devlin's rage because Megan named her horse Sir Ambrose (whom she doesn't realize is really Ambrose). What is really hilarious is Megan's proud announcement to Devlin that she is going to marry Ambrose St. James, or as Devlin knows him.....Ambrose "Devlin" St. James. I love how Devlin tells Megan he told the people at the house they stay at after their marriage that he is Ambrose and she gets mad at him for telling such lies. She doesn't even catch on to who Devlin is when the owner of the home shows up (Devlin's aunt) and begins to talk about his mother. Megan wonders how the woman knows Devlin. Megan's anger and shock at discovering that she actually married the man she set her cap on from the get-go is refreshing, but what is more amusing is his strong belief that Megan really married his "stable". When Megan moves into the stable because she wants her "horsebreeder" back, Devlin knows better. This book is a must read if you're a Lindsay Fan! I've read it more times than I can count. I can't put it down each time I pick it up. It's a MUST READ!!!! You won't be sorry because once you read the first page, you won't be able to put it down. Enjoy!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Man of My Dreams is GREAT, November 14, 2000
This review is from: Man of My Dreams (Paperback)
This is the first Johanna Lindsey Book I read. The first romance book I ever read too. Boy did she get me hooked! I have since bought all her books and re-read all of them many times, but this is probably my favorite. I laughed. I cried. Simply the best! I won't go into a storyline of the book since many others did. I will say that you might also consider getting "Love me Forever" as Megan and Devlin are in that story as well. It seems that most of the books I've read with sequels (or series') the author only puts a page or two with the characters from the previous characters. With "Love me Forever" your get to continue on with Megan and Devlin's story a little longer (throughout the whole book!). Lindsey is very good!! I recommend all her books, especially the "Mallory" series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Johanna Lindsey, June 25, 2001
This review is from: Man of My Dreams (Paperback)
I've read most of Johanna Lindsey's books, and this one is certainly the best in my opinion. I was laughing out loud at Megan, and Devlin is one of the sexiest heros in the genre. It's one of Mrs. Lindsey's steamier romance novels, and also one of the more comedic. You'll fall in love with the characters, and you'll be cheering at the end when Megan gets her revenge on the society matriarch who snubbed her before she was a duchess. I usually am not one to reread books, but I've read this one at least 4 times. I never get sick of it. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars stamp of approval from a non-romance reader, January 25, 2001
This review is from: Man of My Dreams (Paperback)
Okay, I have to admit that I loved this book. I really don't read romance novels, but my sister is addicted to them and occasionally I pick one up and read it if she says it's good. This is probably one of THE best romance novels written, maybe even more so than Lindsey's Mallory novels, which I also reluctantly read and then enjoyed.

This heroine actually has an original, well crafted personality, instead of fitting into the the worn mold of the "sweet, innocent, and gentle" heroine or the snappy "bold, adventurous" heroine. Although repeatedly called a brat, she really isn't half as spoiled as others would have her be, and with all her hysterical conversations with herself, she's just too charming to dislike. Even Devlin, while easily fitting the mold of the arrogant, handsome beefcake hero, has managed to emerge with his own sparkling facets of originality.

The plot, of course, is somewhat unbelievable, as are those of most novels of this genre (it also, unsurprisingly overuses words like "sensuous", etc.). While suspension of belief leaves an entertaining and really very funny story, it is the characters that make this book so wonderful. Besides the character of Megan, the only other interesting people are the antihero, Devlin, who's far brattier and spoiled than Megan could ever aspire to be; Devlin's grandmother; and Lachlan and co. toward the end.

My guess is that if you enjoy romance novels, there's no way you couldn't like this one. Heck, even if you don't like romance novels, you could like Man of my Dreams. Look at me. I actually ended up owning the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok book, October 2, 2002

Well I liked this book to a point. I have an older version of it and the cover art is wonderful.Fabio never looked so good! Also I liked the fiestiness of the characters. They had substance to them. I liked the verbal confrontations between the hero and the heroine. I found the characters to be funny and filled with passion and vulnerable too.

The story has the Hero posing as a lowly horse trainer and stable master. He is actually Ambrose St. James, Duke of Wrothston. Now the reasons for his hiding are a bit uncharacteristic but its the only way he's going to meet the heroine. Megan Penworthy is a beautiful young woman who has set her sights on marrying Ambrose in order to show the villiage that she is worthy. She is shunned by most because of her beauty and she has learned to act a certain way to keep men at bay.

When Devlin, aka Ambrose, shows up he gets under her skin right away. She is unnerved by him and finds herself strongly attracted to him. He finds Megan to be a brat. but one that he desires to make his own.

This is a easy read and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lindsey's Best, April 15, 2000

MAN OF MY DREAMS is, by far, Lindsey's best work. I have yet to find another of her novels that I can read and reread numerous times--never getting tired of the plot. Devlin and Megan follow a humorous path to falling in love. Probably one of the best points about the book is that each is in love with other--even going so far as to confess their love to Devlin's mother--but never admitting so to each other. It is such hilarious happenings throughout the book that keep the reader intrigued . . . and laughing! For all Johanna Lindsey fans, this is a must-read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit on the Inadequate side..., September 3, 2001
By
Abbys (Moreno Valley, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Man of My Dreams (Paperback)
I insisted on reading this because the book description caught my interest. The overall amazon high rating also persuaded me into buying it. The initial plot is of a Duke (Ambrose Devlin St. James) secretly posing as a Horsebreeder (Devlin Jefferys) and a young gentry woman (Megan Penworthy) who have set her heart on marrying a Duke just to spite a snobbish neighborwoman -no matter that she hasn't seen or met this every popular Duke yet. She eventually falls in love with the horsebreeder while despising the Duke...all this without realizing the connection. Meanwhile, Ambrose the Duke, remained Devlin the Horse breeder, because he wanted Megan to accept him for who he is and not for what he is... It's was truly a great plot. Unique as well. Which is why I am heartbroken to report my disappointment in this matter. The first part of this book was fascinating. Fast and engrossing. Lots of humor and tasty banters. But then all of a sudden, I began to read through the story without any emotions whatsoever. It's like going through the program without even realizing it is happening and then, it is over. Towards the middle till the end, the story also became too repetitive for my liking. It discussed the plot, explaining their thoughts, their circumstances over and over again. I think I got the picture the first time already! The banters and humor also became somewhat old towards the end. I tell you, the initial plot surely have very good potentials, it just needs more developing. It also needs an extra twist to spice it up. The primary characters are just as lacking. Devlin and Megan need lots of elaborating. They need more attitude for me to thoroughly enjoy them. I did like them a bit esp. in the beginning but not as favored as I should. Mind you, I wasn't annoyed nor do I hate them. Their character is "that" lacking, I couldn't even form a dislike towards them. Their relationship and togetherness also needs lots of expanding. There were many situations in the book wherein I expected more of the outcome and the consequences. I also find myself skipping page(s) of when Megan starts talking to her conscience. I am sorry but I didn't appreciate that style of J.L's writing at all. Once or twice would have been tolerable but not over and over again!

I really hate giving ratings lower than 3 stars especially if the Author once gave me great entertainment. I've enjoyed lots of Johanna Lindseys work but sad to say, this isn't one of them. However, I believe she is a wonderful author with supreme talents, therefore, I shall continue to read more of Ms. Lindseys books. In fact, I am now in the process of reading LOVE ME FOREVER, which is the sequel of this story.

A lot of Amazon reviewers did enjoy this book to even rate it a 4-5 stars rating so don't take my word for it. Read this one anyway and see for yourself. Who knows, you might enjoy it more than I have.

This book is a fun, short read. I think it is the best of the three in the Sherring Cross series. The characters have lots of personality and are fun to read about. Great for a beach or weekend read.

I loved Man of my Dreams! I have read it three times and am going to read it again and again! I fell in love with Devlin right from the beginning and found he and Megan to be very entertaining! This book makes me smile and laugh out loud! it is so well written, even the scene where Devlin spanks Megan for putting herself in danger is not overdone and I felt like she deserved it! She acted like a child...he treated her that way! I highly recommend this book to every Lindsey fan and especially to those who have never read one of her books.
