Editorial Reviews

In writing the Study Guide to Man, Economy, and State, he had his students in mind. He wanted to design a great teaching tool, one that would reach students the same way a private tutor would. He wanted to help Rothbard's magnum opus have permanent impact on their thinking.

He accomplished his goal! The guide provides a roadmap to this massive book, complete with summaries, technical notes, annotations of key contributions, and study questions. He puts it all into a manageable size, with 12 pages per chapter of the Scholar's Edition (which includes both Man, Economy, and State and Power and Market). It is ideal for classroom use, and also for private study. Another use didn't occur to the author until after he finished it: he uses it to prepare lectures for class! He says now that he doesn't know how he taught without it before.

Murphy sought to write a teaching guide but he ended up writing a manual to Man, Economy, and State that will quickly become a staple of the literature. Would that every book of this size had such a guide (and, yes, he is working on one for Human Action too!), and would that every guide were as clear and useful as this one.

Professor Murphy is an extraordinary talent with a great gift for helping students understand economics. Now he can be your teacher too.

For those who are familiar with Mr Murphy's oeuvres, the fact that this guide is brilliant will come as no suprise. Few are the men who are as able as he to explain and defend the efficacy of the free enterprise way of life. From his lectures on youtube to his essays [...] to this contributions to the PIG series, he never dissapoints. With this fabulous study guide companion to Rothbard's great tome he takes for himself a place at the table of heavyweight intellectuals currently devoting themselves to the regeneration of our country through the return of an individualistic private enterprise philosophy that carried us to a preeminent position atop the world economy. With this companion, M,E,S is now accessible to any intellegent layman willing to learn to think for himself and rise above the stagnant ideology the Washington Leviathon.

Man Economy and State is really not the easiest book in the world but if you make the effort to get your head around it, you will find a solid education in austrian economics that will serve you as ammunition in those oh so important debates and conversations about what counts in the world today. With the world falling into centralised control and most of the population way too ignorant to see the dAnger, the socialists use Keynsian principles to justify theit inferior way of handling the economic future of our lives. Rothbard takes the Keynsian view and drop kicks it into total oblivion. THIS is solid economics and nothing else besodes. To really appreciate this book, it is necessary to read the study guide and do the study questions, watch the videos on the Mises web site, listen to the podcasts and turn your life into one long study period. It is our very liberty we are fighting for so lazyness is no option at all. Study this. The study guide lifts a significant burden from your shoulders. If a chapter is too dense, turn to Murphey. If something went over your head, turn to Murphey. Murphey is an excellent economist and he lays out this study guide in a truly helpful way. Man, Economy and State is a must read for anyone who takes an understanding of modern (and human) realities seriously. The study guide is like a compass to navigate this great terrain. I love it. Thanks Robert.

Rothbard's important economics tome is not difficult to follow, but he does refer to actual equations from time to time so the guide is helpful there and if you are taking notes on this nearly 1000 page tome it is helpful to refer to Robert Murphy executive summary take on the material. A complete understand of MES (w/ Power and Markets) will obviate any need to read Human Action by Ludwig von Mises. I recommend the guide with the tome.
