Appallingly bad transfer,
By Tim Evanson (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: My Man Godfrey (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
This must be the VERY WORST film-to-video transfer I have seen in 20 years. The image is murky. Half the time, heads are cut off in mid-forehead. It's as if the upper and lower 15 percent of the movie were simply chopped off. The sound is clear, but the image? I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR buy this product EVER AGAIN.
The company which is foisting this horrific transfer off on an unsuspecting public, Big D Entertainment, claims that although the film has been digitally remastered, it has been done so to keep the "experience of viewing early cinema intact." This is an outright lie. This simply means that the viewer has to be satisfied with a rotten film print, transferred poorly to DVD, and then poorly digitized. This DVD is similar in appearance to those pirates who sit in the back row of a theater and videotape a major motion picture. It's that poor. DO NOT BUY.

A Great Version!,
By Arthur (America) - See all my reviews Of course not, and especially not with a movie like My Man Godfrey. It's truly an American classic. Set against the recovery period of the 1930's, an all-star cast pull off a lighthearted screwball comedy. Anyone familiar with films from the time period, or of slapstick comedies with a rags to riches story will really appreciate My Man Godfrey. William Powell and Carole Lombard, the two leads, are great and probably contributed most to the longevity of the film as a classic.

Save for the better restored version,

This review is from: My Man Godfrey (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
I thought this was going to be the good one but alas, the restored quality is really lacking. The picture is wobbley and over blown. And the additional bonus of Life With Father is a pure joke. I couldn't even watch the picture it was so badly drawn. Here's my advice- save your money and buy the Criterion Collection edition. This was one sad purchase on my part.

Blue disc,

This review is from: My Man Godfrey (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
This is my second try with this movie. the first being a very cheap one, with predictably bad quality. This issue, though, is not only just as bad (low resolution, excessive contrast) but also, 3X the price. Also, it's a burned disc (sometimes called a blue disc) and will not by some reports last as long as a commercially produced CD.

William Powell + Carole Lombard = Great Comedy,
By
This review is from: My Man Godfrey (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
ABOUT THIS EDITION:
I am always skeptical about new releases of movies that are available in the Public Domain but this edition of My Man Godfrey with Life With Father as a bonus is definately worth having...If you want the best version of this film, Criterion is great but the price tag is a bit high[....]bucks...If you are looking for a good version for a reasonable price, this is it...There are really cheap versions out there but they are really bad with choppy picture and bad sound... ABOUT THE MOVIE: "My Man Godfrey" (1936): Having seen quite a few "Screwball" comedies, they seem to have a couple common goals: to take the audience's mind off the less-than-perfect world outside, and, aim rapid fire, relentless, snappy patter at your brain. You MUST pay attention, or you're quickly left behind. Maybe there's a third goal: somewhere in all the high speed exchanges you'll find a morality tale...the perfect "entertainment" during the American Great Depression. Carole Lombard, Alice Brady, Eugene Palette, and others - all of whom take roles of flakey, pointless, self-centered RICH people - find themselves facing a "Forgotten Man" (jobless, homeless), played by William Powell. Not EVERY thing IS as it seems, but for the most part, this is a story made for the average person still dealing with the collapsed U.S. market. It's funny, demanding, full of wonderful sets and costumes, and reminds us that there are more important things in life than having a full wallet.

Can't believe Amazon is selling this!,
By I chose this version based on others reviews and was very dissappointed. Definitely not worth $19.95, or even $1 in my opinion. I really can't believe Amazon is selling a DVD like this. If you really like this movie bite the bullet and get the Criterion version.

What a great deal for an amazing movie with Xtras...,
By
This review is from: My Man Godfrey (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
My Man Godfrey could just be the greatest screwball comedy of all time as well as an amazing interpretation of just how blind the wealthy can be...
Godfrey is a lost man who is found by a rather spoiled upper east sider as part of a scavenger hunt. She takes him in and he becomes the family butler. Then, things start to go wrong with her father's business and Godfrey steps in to help in an unexpected way. In the process, you find out who Godfrey REALLY is... This edition comes with a great Xtra also, Life With Father, another comedy starring Willaim Powell alongside legendary actress Irene Dunne. In this one, a New York financier rules his numerous family in a calculated manor, when things start to go a bit nutty. A funny look at family life in the 1880's, this movie is one of the best family films ever made and won several awards.

I love this movie. It is hilarious and wonderful with a good lesson to learn about our past and possibly our future. I was a bit disappointed in the quality though. Since it is a remastered copy, I thought it should have been much better. But oh, what a movie it is.

I am very dissapointed in this product.I gave the 3 stars for the quality of the dvd and not the movie which is a 5 star film and one of the best screwball comedies ever made. Nowhere on either the dvd or the case it is in is there any indication of a Collector's Edition. There are no special features in the dvd and the print of the film is in average condition at best! I could not believe in the poor condition of the print! One can hardly see the scenes outside at night. This is the first time that I have been dissapointed in any product bought from Amazon. You should not be advertising this product as a
Collector's Edition if it is not one! Please do not advertise this dvd as a collector's Edition. But as I said, this is the first time that I have ever been dissapointed in any product from Amazon and I have purchased so many items that I have been pleased with that I will let this one slide. Thank U very much! Sincerely, smrz!!!

Timeless entertainment,

This review is from: My Man Godfrey (Collector's Edition) (DVD)
This movie is pure fun. Carol Lombard and William Powell were actors who could tell a light story in an interesting way.
William Powell as a forgotten man is a bit of a stretch but Carol Lombard as his airheaded suiter and the antics she goes to to attract his attention are great entertainment with out having to wonder when something "too much" will happen. |
