This book is an insightful look at the history of Nevada politics as well as the world at large. Don't let the size of this book be off-putting. Its written with such so much insight and wit that is difficult to put down! Senator Raggio is a dynamic man who handled some of Nevada's most interesting cases as DA and later successfully steered Nevada through some very stressful times as state senator.

"A Man of His Word," a herculean task and scholarly effort. It brought me back to my days in Reno and the many visits to the Mapes and Riverside Casinos when Reno was just a small town with a rough and shadowy side of dark casinos, the mob, Joe Conforte his famous Mustang Ranch and working girls, government corruption and other interesting and odd characters. The intricate workings of the legislative process, Senator William J. Raggios contribution to the State of Nevada, the mention of past and present day politicians along with Nevada native and present Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid makes this book informative, insightful and historic.

A well written book about Raggio, however, many punches were pulled, particularly in the case of Joseph Conforte, Raggio's nemesis.

Overall, this is an excellent read that is well worth the price.

The first section of the book, which covers a time period that actually pre-dates the birth of Bill Raggio, is a fascinating history of early Nevada that would be well worth the read and price alone.

The second section of the book covers Raggio's youth. This was the only section in the book that didn't feel like it had a multitude of sources, and to some extent felt a little like a dictation by Raggio. Given Raggio's age, and the fact that the influential teachers and friends may have passed away, this was understandable. Still it was the weak spot in the book and the only place where there was a little "drag" to the 600 page book.

The third section covers Raggio's time as Washoe County District Attorney and his interactions with the administration of President Richard Nixon. This covers everything from murder trials to the on-going struggle for the soul of reno known as Raggio v. Conforte. (I am glad that Raggio won!). This was very well written, very well sourced by a multitude of archival records and interviews, and really fascinating reading.

The fourth section covers Raggio's time as a State Senator in chapters covering each biennium. This was also very well sourced from archival and interview research. It was interesting to see how the debates in Nevada have changed--and not changed sometimes--over the past 40 years. It also had a good description of Governors past, present, and future (maybe) in the book.

This book is only $4.99 and was one of the best books I read this year. It is a history of Nevada and Reno. And, to some degree because of Raggio's cooperation, a guide map to future leaders of Nevada. A history where people can ascertain what worked--and more importantly what didn't work--in the past, so we don't have government do too much...or worse, do the wrong thing. Excellent book.
