Editorial Reviews

2011 release from the Rock/Blues guitarist and leader of Gov't Mule. Warren Haynes continues to be one of the most lauded straight-ahead Rock lead guitarists performing today. But with this album, his superior vocals are also at the forefront. Haynes' bold and emotive delivery, shimmering with his smoky vibrato is not to be missed. The album features Ivan Neville on organ and background vocals, Ian McLagan on piano, Ruthie Foster on background vocals, George Porter Jr. on bass and Ron Holloway on saxophone. The album was recorded live in studio to capture all of the emotion, passion and spontaneity on two-inch tape with vintage tube microphones.

This is an exceptional album - a great funky soul-drenched set wherein Warren celebrates the music that first turned him on as a young child. Don't expect the monstrous riffs of Gov't Mule (and most Muleheads wouldn't expect them from a solo album of Warren's anyway) but do dig the syncopated licks and fills and call and responses with the horns and keyboards that all coalesce into fantastic songs that pour from the speakers like honey on a hot day.

Those of us who are big fans of Warren Hanyes and Gov't Mule know how adventurous he is and have heard him do "soul" music before. But THIS is the real thing. THIS is the album Stax has been looking to release for a long time. All Haynes originals except for one cover, these songs groove and rock. The sound is tasteful and clean compared to the heavier sound of Gov't Mule yet there is ample room for exploration by both Warren on guitar and the rest of the band including the horns and the keys. Bassist George Porter Jr. holds down and incredible groove that the players weave in and out of with ease. And yet the songs are all beautifully crafted and give ample opportunity for Warren to display perhaps his greatest gift, his remarkably powerful and soul drenched vocals. Backup singers lend a feel of gospel, particularly on the album's highlight, the passionate "River's Gonna Rise." This is a tremendous album by a tremendous artist. Buy it.

Warren hits it out of the park with this nice 10 track effort. Funky, bluesy, roots-ish rock that hits on many levels. I've always loved Warren when he is solo with his acoustic guitar, but don't think I've ever heard him with a backing studio band behind him like this. It is a very solid and well produced recording - with not one "fwd" worthy track on it. On the other hand, it has many which would dutifully warrant a "repeat" button.

Sometimes an album just works; this is one of those times. Thanks Warren. Love each and every track and expect these to "wear well"

Warren Haynes - Man In Motion (2011) ***** (66:22)

Well, I have to say that after listening to this new solo album by Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule / Allman Bros), that it is nothing like anything I have ever heard him perform in the past. The only thing that is familiar is Warren's voice and his signature Gibson guitar sound. Everything else is all new territory. For starters, none of his usual band mates play on this record, and the size of this musical ensemble (six people) has practically doubled in comparison to his past three-piece unit that was the mainstay of his musical career with Gov't Mule for about a decade. The other thing that sounds truly "out-of-the-ordinary" on this disc is the inclusion of a saxophone player (Ron Holloway) on about half of the tracks.

Another thing I really like is the song lengths. These are not 3½ or 4 minute little diddys. The average length of the 10 songs on Man In Motion is 6½ minutes, with the title track kicking things off at almost 8 minutes. Here are some observations regarding the various tracks:

The first track, Man In Motion starts things off with a good taste of everything you're gonna get on this album: piano, organ, guitar, drums and bass, even some horns. The only thing missing is the backing vocals of Ruthie Foster. If you are like me, you will really like the smooth and lively bass playing of George Porter, Jr. Warren's guitar tone never sounded better as he picks his way thru sections with the horns or organ accompaniment. River's Gonna Rise begins with just a cool drum beat as each of the other instruments slowly come into the picture. Once you hear Warrens baritone voice and some smooth guitar notes this song falls into a cool groove with a laid back feel.

Warren Haynes performs stunningly on this new CD release, titled 'Man In Motion'. Warren Haynes presents in this CD 10 great compositions, wonderful guitar work & impressive vocals. The overall sound is that of great bluesy-rock sound. The opening track "Man In Motion" : is a solid track/gem/stand-out, a great choice for a title & opening track (gives you the impressive overall feel of this great CD). Other solid tracks/gems/stand-outs include "River Gonna Rise" (sound reminiscent of Kenny Rogers' "Islands In The Stream" sound, very impressive guitar work/sound), "Everyday Will Be Like A Holiday", "Sick Of My Shadow" (wonderful melody), "Your Wildest Dreams" (a slow/ballad track), "A Friend To You" (great sound reminiscent of the band Bad Company's great sound) & "Save Me" (wonderful ballad, great keyboard/guitar combination, great vocals & melody). Great tracks include "On A Real Lonely Night" & "Take A Bullet" (great melody). Okay/good track is "Hattiesburg Hustle" (mid-tempo track). There is no weak track to talk of on this great CD "Man In Motion", 10 great tracks, delivered by a 'man in a serious motion' to dish out great music! On overall, this is a very impressive musical delivery by the talented singer-songwriter/guitarist Warren Haynes, a highly recommended CD listening. A well deserved 5 star perfomance!

Been a Mule fan for a quite a while... This new album doesn't have the bite that I was originally expecting or anticipating, yet it does not fail to please. The diversity of tracks leaves me acoustically satisfied. When it comes to Warren, the guitar licks never are lacking, so it is the rest of the orchestration that pushes the bar higher. Right from the start with the title track, this album grabs you. Phenomenal sax work on "Sick of My Shadow" complements the great guitar work that I've come to love from Warren. I really enjoyed "Take a Bullet", with the good groove and the horns (always liked seeing Mule live when they had the horn section)! I don't know if you could find a better closer to this album than the thick gospel-soul sound of "Save Me".
