Book Description

November 26, 2008
He wore a mask of dark, cold iron - that a nation might not face the fiery crucible of civil war! Three decades earlier, the young swordsman d'Artagnan and the swashbuckling Three Musketeers were the most celebrated heroes in 17th-century France. But they have long since pursued their separate destinies - and are suddenly astonished to find themselves on opposing sides in a titanic struggle for the throne of a burgeoning empire. And the pawn in this battle royal is none other than the identical twin brother of King Louis XIV - the tormented soul doomed to become forever "the man in the iron mask." Adapted from Alexandre Dumas' thrilling classic by award-winning writer Roy Thomas and the fabulous artistic team of Hugo Petrus and Tom Palmer. Collects Marvel Illustrated: The Man In The Iron Mask #1-6.

This review is from: The Man in the Iron Mask (Marvel Illustrated) (Paperback)
"The Man in the Iron Mask" was actually an episode of a multi-volume novel by French author Alexandre Dumas. It begins with the popular story of the accession of a young D'Artagnan to the King's Musketeers and ends decades later with the feats of the aging four Musketeers and their children. "The Man in the Iron Mask" has been adapted in past to the screen and comic book format as a discrete story, usually with a happier ending than was provided by Dumas. Author Roy Thomas and illustrator Hugo Petrus boldy take on the task of compressing Dumas' original story into graphic novel format for Marvel Comics.

Thomas begins this novel with a quick prologue that establishes the identities of D'Artagnan and his three Musketeer companions. The story proper begins with the introduction of the now priestly Aramis to a unique prisoner in the bowels of the dreaded Bastille Royal Prison. The prisoner, a young man, bears a striking resemblance to the sitting King of France, and has a fascinating explanation for the resemblance. Out of this encounter is born a plot, hatched by Aramis, that will have far-reaching implications for the four Musketeers, their friends and family, and the Kingdom of France.

Thomas does an excellent job of compressing the story and its dialogue into around 150 pages, but he has to work around the complex rivalries of French politics reflected in the original. Hugo Petrus' artwork is more than adequate for the graphic presentation. Themes of violence, treason, and treachery really are meant for a young adult audience. "The Man in the Iron Mask" is highly recommended to that audience.
