Product Description

Jon Spencer, heart-attack front man of the Blues Explosion and shudder-and-shake specialist of rockabilly wildmen Heavy Trash, takes on Luther and Cody Dickinson, masterminds of the North Mississippi All-Stars, in a no-holds-barred Mississippi Mud Fight, and the result is a rock'n'roll rumble and a darker side of soul!!! "I was a little messed up in the head anyway," confesses Spencer, telling the tale of this backwoods electric throw-down, recorded with producer, wizard, and legendary Memphis musician Jim Dickinson at his Zebra Ranch. "It was freezing cold. It was tough, just a barn with a space heater. We got that freak element. We got the groovy hate vibe. We got weird." Can you handle the truth? Get tough and enjoy yourself.

This collaboration between the Blues Explosion's Jon Spencer and the North Mississippi Allstars' Luther and Cody Dickinson sounds like serious voodoo, musical mud wrestling, or an accident waiting to happen--maybe all three at once. The most straightforward tracks seem to pay homage to such legendary primitives as the Stooges ("That's a Drag," "Sat Morn Cartoons," "Book of Sorrow") and the Cramps ("It's Not OK," "The Man Who Lived for Love"), but the musical interplay ultimately stretches to explore a more delirious expanse. "Flood (The Awful Truth, The Living End)" and the epic "I'm So Alone" delve to the deepest bottom of the blues, "Why?" features the organ accompaniment of co-producer/patriarch Jim Dickinson on a Memphis soul strut, and the harder-edged funk of "Cryin'" sounds like James Brown on a psychedelic bender. Then there's the folk lilt and Eastern delicacy of the instrumental "Appalachia." Recorded in 2000, the first twelve of these tracks were released only in Japan in 2001, yet the project as a whole seems to exist in a musical dimension beyond time. --Don McLeese

This is one tough LP to review - but I'm gonna give it a shot. Okay. Imagine 3 aliens cruizing by earth after playing some galactic super festival in the early 70's. Their radio picks up a station from Texas spinning the entire Tres Hombres LP - they hear it almost in its entirety. As soon as they set down on their home planet 8 months later - they record what they heard the best they can remember. Confusing. Well, welcome to the world of Jon Spencer. I would have probably given this disc 3 stars - but I would have recommended it over 99% of any 5 star disc. Confusing. John Spencer. My son won't admit he likes it - but will not allow me to eject it at any time, slapping my hand down. Confusing. Yeah. (truthfully, I would not have gone through with said ejection). Cool Music, steady grooves with alien bleeps throughout. Buy it. You won't admit you love it - but you will constantly play it. Welcome to the world of Jon Spencer.

If you're like me, and just want to rock out to some dirty blues every once in a while, you'll like this CD. No new ground is broken by Spencer or the great Dickinson brothers, but its still better than most pop music. Not to mention the vintage cover art is awesome.

Rock and Roll Man! Trying to analyze this music like an overly educated art major is pointless. This album is pure Rock N' Roll and just makes me want to plug in, stomp on the Fuzz, and get lost. If you dig the music of Jon, the Dickinsons, anything on Fat Possum Records, this album is no slouch. I'll give it it's first 5 star rating.
