"Rick Johnson expresses what millions of us see and feel today when it comes to broken male culture and the absence of models and mentors to train the next generation of men. I believe that new personal and family histories await the men who see and internalize the timeless observations contained in this treasure chest of manhood."--Kenny Luck, author of Sleeping Giant, pastor of men at Saddleback Church, and founder of Every Man Ministries

"I am so grateful for friends like Rick Johnson who diligently expose me to models and pathways and illustrations of how I can launch my three boys into godly adulthood. This is my job and I cannot and I must not give it away to another!"--Brian Doyle, founder and president of Iron Sharpens Iron

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring! August 28, 2013
Format:Paperback
Admittedly, I own a couple other titles by this author, but haven't read them yet. But this book will be put on my "read over and over again" shelf.

While I'm not a father, I am the one who spends the most time with my two young boys, and I found every section in this book littered with inspiration and practical application. Each chapter provided an interesting, brief biographical description of a "great" man from history who exuded specific character traits. I enjoyed learning about these from a specific perspective (such as honor, duty, or perseverance) and appreciated Johnson's take on encouraging our boys to grow up emulating men like these instead of rock stars or emasculated TV personalities.

Buy a few extra copies... this book would make a great gift for any caretaker of young boys. And keep your highlighter handy!

In today's society of broken homes, single moms, and dads that are little more than token figures, this is an outstanding book about what it takes to turn our sons into men that we can be proud of. It is readable, approachable, and godly, making this one of the few parenting books on raising boys I've read this year that I can recommend.

If you are a father, you need to read this book. If you are the mother of a father, get this for your son. If you are the wife of a father, get this for your husband. Recommended for church libraries and pastor's studies as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great tool for parents, or anyone raising young boys August 24, 2013
By Mark B
Format:Paperback
I don't have any kids, nor will I likely ever have any, but I still like to review books like these once in a while to see what is out there to recommend to others, and to help get the word out about books like these.

This book was written as a help for parents in raising their sons to turn out to the men they should be. I have read a few books like this, and this is one of the best ones I have read. In each chapter, the author takes a well known man of character and a character trait that stood out in them. He discusses briefly the man, then goes on to expound more on the character trait and how to instill it in boys.

The book is not just a helpful tool, it is an interesting read, and I found the idea of using men from history to help show the value of each character trait an excellent idea and it makes the book even easier to glean helpful information from. I would recommend this book for any parents that have sons they are trying to raise right.

Parenting advocate Rick Johnson has written a number of excellent and always timely parenting resources. In his newest offering, A MAN IN THE MAKING, he shares with both moms and dads (and all interested others) a bevy of to-the-point practical ways to help rear men of character. In a day and age when even the word itself is almost forgotten, Johnson helps light a fire of enthusiasm as he shares how to purposefully influence boys into men who will make a positive difference with their lives. He also lays the foundation (for those who may have forgotten) why godly character qualities can change not only one man's life and family, but also an entire nation.

Johnson begins this parenting primer by telling of his own broken home childhood story (all too common these days). He explains about the value of role models (good and bad) and how they alter a child's future. Since coming to Christ as an adult, Johnson has made it his mission to spread powerful messages of hope to single moms (and their sons), incarcerated men (and their children), and men of all walks of life who desire to become the leader God designed them to be (in the home and in society in general). Lest any female readers wrongly assume that Johnson negates their influence on their children, reading through this material proves just the opposite. He has the highest respect and regard for women in general and moms specifically because he understands how difficult the task of child rearing is, especially when women don't have the support they require from their children's father.

I have read many books on raising boys (including "Wild at Heart" and "Bringing up Boys") and this one is my favorite. I would encourage every parent raising sons and every educator and school administrator to read this book. I know not everyone enjoys history lessons, but even if the mini character studies he gives at the beginning of each chapter seem dry to you, at least read the life application afterwards. I completely agree with his observations and suggestions and think our society is doing itself and its citizens a huge disservice by the way boys are treated.
I can't stress enough how much I recommend this book to anyone who wants the boy in his or her life to turn into the best man he can be.
