5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all electronic lovers., April 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Man the Manipulator (Audio CD)
Alright, so I just want to start off by saying, theres many electronic artists, and groups out there, some deserve to be realized, others don't deserve to be. Soulo has been noticed by few, but they deserve far more.

So they aren't the first to do what they do, but they sure do it better than many others. Groups such as Antarctica, Boards of Canada, and Zero 7 share similar styles, but not as great as Soulo. Those groups seem to just be using the sounds from a keyboard that they bought, with a guitar hooked up to the effects peddle, some distortion, a drum machine with some samples of some soft female voice, and other samples stretched out from a computer program that you can buy for a cheap price, and recorded on computer by the same computer program, then finally burned to cd. It sounds as if Soulo works harder than any of these groups and other imitations put together.

Instead of being bored half-way through a never ending 70-80 minute cd that contains only of 8-10-20 minute tracks that are just loops after loops of the same recorded sample. You'll find yourself delighted with the shorten and completed tracls of Soulo, without boredom or shame. Its only a little longer than 30 minutes, and very promising to bring a smile to your face, while it relaxes you from a harsh day of daily life. Depressed, nervous, happy, or any other type of feelings, this cd fits like the missing piece of the puzzle.

On this album you see Scott Benzel as the producer, cover artwork done by Sam Durant, and guest musicians such as John Tejeda, Jussi Lehtisalo, Ted Casterline and plenty of more.

If you enjoyed the self titled EP, you will absolutely love this. And if you have yet to own any of their titles, all I can say is, if you enjoy the following musicians and groups, I recommend to give Soulo a chance: Jean Miche Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Two Lone Swordsmen, Zero 7, Boards of Canada, Antarctica, Alec Empire (not the heavy stuff, the more experimental stuff), Aphex Twin, Safety Scissors, Tujiko Noriko, Tangerine Dream, BLT, Violet Vision, Crystal Method, the Orb, Orbital, Moby, Brian Eno, Snooze (Going Mobile), Herbie Hancock (newer stuff), Future Sound of London, Mouse on Mars, Andrew Barnabas, DJ Spooky, and so many more, though I can't go on I must end this.

But yes, support Soulo, buy both their self titled EP and their latest release, Man the Manipulator, trust me, you wont be disappointed. Till next time, I can't wait for any futher releases, and I wish Soulo the best of luck on any future touring, later!

4.0 out of 5 stars Promising Skeleton, Awaiting the Flesh, May 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Man the Manipulator (Audio CD)
These guys are going to do it, they are going to make a full on non-stop sonic shuffle monsterpiece, and this release hints at it. A little less cheeky priggishness (confounded Aphex Twin) and they'll be right over the top. A lot of weird elements, slide guitar and such bumping into electrons bumping and burping, freaky vocals recorded through the shower door, etc., etc., An extra 1/2 star for the cover art.
