Book Description

Haynes Workshop Manual October 14, 2002
Man Mk 1 has been around a very long time, the basic model having remained unchanged for a lot longer that the original Model T Ford. Engine, chassis and bodywork spec are not a great deal different from that seen in the super cool showrooms of the last Ice Age. With a little care, this high performance machine will last a long lifetime with minimal need for maintenance or spare parts. However, like any piece of high technology, a basic understanding of what goes on beneath the bonnet will greatly aid longevity. Men tend to view their bodies in a mechanistic way, which is fine, as long as the working tolerances of their particular model are not exceeded and regular maintenance takes place. Designed to help men look after themselves, this text takes a general look at men's health.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not like other Haynes manuals, July 17, 2004

This review is from: Man Manual (Haynes Workshop Manual) (Hardcover)
I was disappointed in this book. I've been buying and using Haynes automotive manuals for years, and I expected something similar. This is a thin book (about 140 pages) with a random and shallow coverage of the male body. As an example, the chapter on Fuel & exhaust (digestive and urogenital systems) is 16 pages long, and covers testicular cancer, but not colon cancer. There's also an inane cartoon named Dipstick who appears throughout the book, dispensing advice such as "Don't end up an insurance write-off. Give up the cigs." There are no maintenance procedures other than pointing out the obvious (advice for corns is "Buy shoes that fit properly and try to walk around the house barefoot.")

There is also diagnostic section, with fault finding charts. One of the questions under Headache is "Did the headache follow a time of excessive drinking?", followed by a diagnosis of "Hangover".

The book does have some detailed anatomical diagrams.

If you want to maintain your car, buy a Haynes manual. If you want to maintain your body, see your doctor and buy a medical book.
