An essential part of any jazz collection, March 6, 2005
This review is from: Man of Many Parts (Audio CD)
This is a superb collection of works by a true jazz master. I had never even heard of Buddy Collette until I received the vinyl from a friend of mine back in the late 1980's, and loved it from the first note to the last. The man is brilliant in his performance of both tradiitonal and (at the time - 1956) more innovative jazz styles. Most of the pieces are original Collette compositions, with a couple of covers (I love his version of "Makin' Whoopee") as well. And this is not even mentioning the fact that, as the album title implies, he plays many different instruments throughout the collection. The liner notes are a treat, as they are written by Buddy Collette himself, and tell you in his own words the inspiration behind his own compositions, and the selection of the covers.
I would be surprised to hear that (and would welcome discussion with) any true jazz aficionado would not be very pleased with this collection.
