an author most worthy, January 6, 2003
This review is from: A Man Most Worthy (Hardcover)
A man most worthy is Marcus Major's 3rd novel. This book features new characters that I have no doubt we can all related to.( an old favorite that we've been missing :)) The main characters of the book are John Sebastian, a wealthy, 30 something male who has everything except a love he can't forget. The other unforgettable character is Josephine Prescott, who is in a marriage that she is not so sure about. The book is very well written. The story line is excellent. Marcus knows how to get and keep your attention from the first page to the very last. No other author I think can compare to his style and imagination. This book is funny, it is full of drama, the characters are complexed and REAL. You will find yourself laughing out loud. it's incredible how a male author can write about and understand the women psyche so well! Amazing! This book is for "GROWN FOLKS" however. It tends to be very sexually graphic. The only bad thing is now we are going to have to wait another year or so for another one of Marcus' gems. Because this book is so funny, extremely REAL, with characters that we can relate to, for believing in and writting about the true essence of love, Marcus Major is definitely AN AUTHOR MOST WORTHY! Major is definitely worthy!, December 31, 2002
This review is from: A Man Most Worthy (Hardcover)
If I had to pick one word to describe Marcus Major's new book, A Man Most Worthy, it would be WONDERFUL...in all caps!! Major has been a favorite of mine since he first entered the literary scene with Good Peoples and now, quite simply, I'm HOOKED; again...all caps! 36-year-old John Sebastian is a successful, well-known millionaire who has it all; including a beautiful young girlfriend. In spite of al this, he's missing out on true love. The one that got away seven years before is Josephine Prescott. She's the vice-principal of an elementary school in his old neighborhood, married, and a bit overweight and often overlooked by her husband. He's the superintendent of a rich school district, overbearing, and only concerned with himself and getting Josephine into his school district; mainly because he's concerned about what his peers think of her working in a poor neighborhood. Added to this ensemble of characters we have Jules, John's best friend and Mr. Duke, who took a large part in raising both men. Once John decides to start a new branch in his old hometown, Mr. Duke suggests that John give back to his community by mentoring some of the underprivileged students in his old neighborhood. Unbeknownst to John, Mr. Duke purposely selects Josephine's school as the beneficiary and a whirlwind of activities follow suit when Josephine comes face to face with John. I loved this book and Major's ability to so easily depict the thoughts of his characters, especially the female ones through some of the most emotional times of their lives. As Josephine goes through dealing with her past with John, the pains he inflicted on her, as well as her current weight gain and the new pain her husband doles out, I felt moved and linked to them. It felt as if I had personally shared her trials and tribulations with her, as if I were her best friend helping her get through them...just as I would one of my own girlfriends. Additionally, seeing John's desire to right the wrongs done so long ago and prove himself worthy were also a great addition to the story. Did I say I loved this book? I felt it and connected with the characters. As with his previous works, Major's writing style remains crisp, witty, emotional, insightful and thoroughly captivating! The subplots even had me drawn into the story as I cheered the characters on and took part in their everyday lives. This is a book that teaches a lesson of true friendship, forgiveness, and making the best out of the decisions we've made in our lives. To close...check this one out for yourself and determine just as I did that Major is just as worthy as his characters for all praise bestowed upon him for this novel. Simply WONDERFUL...all caps! ENGROSSING PAGER TURNER.........., January 25, 2003
This review is from: A Man Most Worthy (Hardcover)
Where does one start when everything an author writes is worth GOLD? Attention getting and most fullfilling, Major's latest novel is filled with all that a true reader wants and needs in a GREAT read. A novel with many laughs, sexual encounters and wise tales, Major's story takes you into the lives of John Sebastian, a self-made millionaire and his girlfriend known to us as "Scent" who's every man's trophy. The older John gets, the more substance he wants from life. Scent on the other hand, is youthful and wants to experience all that her youth has to offer. Then theirs Josephine who's a well grounded young woman and from the "hood", her husband Darren, who just seems to be everything Josephine wants and Gloria, who's Josephine's best friend and advisor. Josephine works as a vice-principal of a school and despises her boss, while Darren works as a superintendent for a school district and thinks his wife just "wastes her time working there". Gloria runs a business originally left behind by her father and has sored her oats so much so that she had convinced herself that she could do without a man, so it seemed. Lastly, theirs Jules, John's best friend who keeps John on his toes, and Duke, a very wise father like figure to both John and Jules and who knows what's best for everyone. John run's his own business, driving folks here and there and Duke's...........simply a wise old man. When these character's lives begin the mix, you are given a story that's sure to scratch that itch you've been trying to reach. Filled with snazzy dialogue, love, laughter, deception, surprises and sex (steamy I might add) Major's latest novel will be one you will highly recommend. Sit down, stand up, read and ENJOY!
