Grade 2-5-- Not just another wild horse book, this photo essay captures the drama of horse-taming (although, strictly speaking, these are feral horses, not mustangs). Ancona's photos and detailed narrative describe the process of capture, transport, branding, and training animals culled from overpopulated herds. He expands on Patent's Where the Wild Horses Roam (Clarion, 1989), as he documents the steps of the training program involving prison inmates as horse trainers. The many black-and-white photos clearly tell the story, with dramatic action shots showing the horses' struggles as they adjust to their lives in captivity. The straightforward text will enthrall potential owners, as Ancona describes how the Bureau of Land Management cares for the animals and prepares them for new homes.
