Not for the faint of heart..., September 5, 2007
This review is from: The Man From Her Past (Harlequin Super Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Whoever said that Harlequin romances don't deal with tough issues has never read this book. Five years ago Cassie Warner was raped. Her husband, unable to deal with what happened, became distant. Pregnant with the rapists child, Cassie left. Now she's back. Her father is ill, and not only does she have to deal with an aging parent, but the man who never stopped loving her.
This book is not an easy read. It's a good one, full of lots of deep emotion and family drama, but it's certainly not a light summer read. This book takes a hard look at the issues that affect families as well as deep emotional traumas. This story moved me to tears at times.
This story is a raw, well-written look at family dynamics and rekindling love in the face of great adversity.

Yuck, January 5, 2009
This review is from: The Man From Her Past (Harlequin Super Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I rarely write reviews on books that I didn't enjoy. This book was put out in August of 2007 so it is an older book.
The other reviewers are correct that this touched on some very sensitive issues such as rape and having a child result from the rape. If you are interested in such a book, then you may like this book.
This was not escapist reading as most romance books are, light beach reading. If you like to read romance books for escapism, this is not the book for you.
There was a lot of angst and anguish. Most of it hinged around the main character and her inability to to give the men in her life a second chance. Of course, had she given them a first chance after her rape, there would not have been much of a story.
The writing style was annoying. The sentences were short, choppy, incomplete thoughts. They often jumped from thought to thought and in some cases to the next day with no clear flow through.
This was one of the least enjoyable books that I have read recently.

Readers will appreciate this angst filled family drama., August 11, 2007
This review is from: The Man From Her Past (Harlequin Super Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Five years ago, Cassie Warner was raped. Unable to cope, she divorced her spouse Van Haddon although she still loved him. Next she fled their hometown Honesty, Virginia unable to look at her family either. Before leaving she warned her father and her ex husband to not contact her.
Now with her seventy-three years old father Leo mentally ailing, Van contacts Cassie, who has come home from Washington state where she worked in a woman's shelter to help her father. However, she plans to avoid Van Haddon who she still loves because she cannot deal with his condemnation of her daughter Hope, a result of that violent act. As it is she knows the gossips will have a field day. However, Harmony is too small for Van and Cassie not to meet; as they still love one another, he wants her back, but must prove that her daughter is his too even if she was someone else's seed.
This is a character driven second chance at love filled with realistic protagonists suffering from anguish caused by the rape. Ironically, the result of that violent act is the aptly named Hope, a precocious little girl who executes her septuagenarian grandfather's matchmaking plan to bring her mom and her dad (in Hope's mind Van is dad) back together. Readers will appreciate this angst filled family drama.
