A found gem of electronic art,
By
This review is from: Man in Space With Sounds (Audio CD)
Attilio Mineo is one of those obscure artists who created music so far ahead of its time that we are still trying to catch up to it today. What we have today, in 1999, is music that is reminiscent of science fiction soundtracks from "Forbidden Planet" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" to "Terminator 2" and "The Fifth Element." But the music also resembles some of the earliest tape-loop experiments by people like Stockhausen, where traditional musical elements were combined with samples and sound effects. Mineo manages to blends orchestral scores with sound effects so that there is almost no distinction between them. The strings and horns are as "alien" as the alarm sounds and the theromyne wails. What really makes this music contemporary with 1999, however, is the thing that probably killed its commercial appeal in the 1960s--the narrator. At the start of each track, a narrator offers a brief comment, designed to guide the visitor through the fair. From a modern perspective, however, the narrator merely adds another weird element to music that is already weirder than most anything I've ever heard. Again, this is a gem: a found piece of electronic art that deserves recognition.

Edgy, anxious sounds from the birth of the Space Age.,
By peter_balestrieri@intuit.com (Palo Alto, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Man in Space With Sounds (Audio CD)
Man in Space with Sounds by Atillo Mineo was composed for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. It was featured in the Bubbleator, part of the World of Tomorrow exhibit. It's an amazing collection of edgy, anxious orchestral music with loads of sound effects that conjure up images of space travel and other planets. Always interesting and spooky, the combination of sounds gives one a good idea of the fears and anxieties that people felt at the beginning of the Space Age. Mineo combines his musical elements with a master's touch and the results are always listenable and engaging, often sounding like the best science fiction scores from Hollywood. 5 stars minimum!

A jackpot for anyone searching for 1950's space music!,

Super cool! Chock-full of outer space noises, Man in Space with Sounds will appeal to fans of 1950's science fiction soundtracks (for example, Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still). The Amazon.com review is accurate: While the narrator promises an optimistic furture (with "mile-a-minute monorails" and "custom-made weather"), the music is, in contrast, downright eerie. Another great thing out this CD release is that the entire composition is included twice, once with the narration and once without.

Essential "Music of the Future, but Now.",
By A Customer
This review is from: Man in Space With Sounds (Audio CD)
Unfortunately, the concept of writing music anticipating the future, "Music of the Future, but Now" peaked in the 1960s with the popular interest in government sponsored space travel. Ironically, pursuit of such music requires a journey in to the past (1940 - 1970, I would guess.)Byron Werner (he coined "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music") turned me on to "Man in Space With Sounds" via a cassette dupe years ago. Now Jack Diamond has the balls to re-issue it. "Man In Space with Sounds" is now available painlessly (i.e. without the collector's price tag) and digitally - on CD! Drop the disc into your computer. Invite the chaise lounge from the pocket in your aluminum wall to attend. Instruct your robot servant to fix your favorite cocktail, and enjoy the music that should have been now. - Jack Fetterman

Man in SPACE sounds GREAT!,

Orchestral and moody - not a lot of melody to hang yer hat on. Loads of 60's electronics, just the kind of thing you'd expect from the title. Eerie. Atmospheric. Spaaaaaceeyyy. Super Cool. The manic prounouncements of the announcer are the icing on the cake.

2001 Played it Safe, Not Maestro Mineo.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Man in Space With Sounds (Audio CD)
Man in Space With Sounds.I was watching "2001, A Space Odyssey" and noticed how dated and odd it seemed. Yet here we are now on the verge of Y2K and nothing in the film looks or sounds a bit like this great vision of the future thought it might. Most people enjoy the sound track but in a way it's kind of a failure. The producers played it way to safe by scoring the film with classical music. That's not so with "Man In Space With Sounds". These are the right sounds, they go with everything from "Lost in Space" to Star Wars". This is truly a valuable recording. It fits right in the idea that people in the near future were going to move around modern buildings in things like the Bubbleator. This is not just a sonic vision for the USA but one for the whole world. In 1962 this is what power behind the Space Needle and the whole World's Fair thought the closing days of their lives were sure to be like. However, these are "Subliminal Sounds". Sounds that echo from Inside not the outside. Subliminal means, below the threshold of conscious perception. It is a word used to describe stimuli that vibrates the cords of inter space. The kind of things that are inadequate to produce conscious awareness but able to evoke a response none the less. In the 1960's LSD was already undergoing studies at the governments expense. The first astronauts of inner space had already blasted off. Attilio Mineo was attempting awaken the future deep inside of the minds of the passengers aboard the Space Needle. The music is an electronic attempt to prepare his audience for "The X Files" that were still decades ahead. You don't need the Bubbleator to take you away. Maestro Minio knew it only took earphones. This recording is a must for anyone with an interest in exploring the connection between inner and outer space, today ,tomorrow and.....inward. twise@mediacity.com |
