Not the Sponge of yesteryear...,
By
This review is from: The Man (Audio CD)
This is NOT the sponge of yesteryear! That being said, taking away all original members except Vin this could have been worse I suppose. It's always refreshing to hear Vin's voice rather than all this other garbage on radios etc.
I will say the new band members are horrible. The only compliments I can make on this cd are about Vins voice, and Billy's drumming in spots. For those who don't know, Vin wrote the whole song "for all the drugs..." so that explains why it is so good. This is a much heavier sounding sponge reminding me at times of Alice in Chains. They also are trying to fit into the new modern genre of nickelback and creed on a few songs, which I don't really care for. The opening song takes a few listens but it okay...I really dig the song "Glue" as well. There is a particular song on here (back against the wall) that sounds like they didn't even try to make a song. It's awful. It sounds kind of liek they recorded a band practice of them just jamming along, and decided to keep it as a record track. It's not even b-side material, because Sponge's old b side stuff is amazing. I blame most of this on the fact that non-oringinal members are blocking old sounds. I so badly miss Mike and Joey playing their signature guitar sounds, over Tim's backing bassline and Jimmy/Charlies creative drumming. Joey Mazzola is much needed back for his writing process! He is a phenomenal guitarist. Most Sponge fans are going to enjoy Vin's voice as I stated earlier, but don't expect to love this cd. If someone actually loves this cd, I would expect that they weren't born too many Sponges ago!

Not Hard for Sponge to Keep their Cool,

Another great album from Sponge. It would almost seem like the last song on The Man should have been on the last album (For All The Drugs In The World) but it was worth the wait.

BEST SPONGE ALBUM EVER!!!!!!!,

This review is from: The Man (Audio CD)
This is by far the best Sponge album yet, why didnt they think of doing the metal thing alot sooner. The album is pure gold from beginning to end. My Favorites are "Fame and Glory", "Unglue", and "The Man", but dont get me wrong all tracks are gold.

Sponge - A Decade Later and Independent,

No. This is not Rotting Pinata. And 2005 wasn't 1995 either. Once you get over that and continue to appreciate Sponge's sound and contribution to Detroit Rock N' Roll, you'll get over the hump pretty quickly. The Man is a sick track and probably the band's finest, grittiest album to date. I got a chance to see them perform it live and they've still got all their chops as an aging band. Great to still 'The Man' still has some red hot blood coursing through his veins.

Yeah, this one is pretty heavy. I can understand why some folks who may like "New Pop Sunday" (a very fine disc) wouldn't like this one so much. However, I am not one of those people.
I like it a lot! This particular effort fits in perfectly between my copy of "Core" by STP and "Dirt" by Alice In Chains. If you like those two albums, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. It is not exactly like those records, but it is in a similar vein as far as attitude, lyrics, and all around heaviness. Fans of those albums will really discover a hidden gem here. Can safely say now that I like every Sponge disc. These guys are so talented, and I sure hope they keep making music. Thanks Vin and co., keep up the good work!

Sponge? Are You Sure?,

I did not care for this cd. It's not radio friendly, no smooth songs on it, it's mismatched at best! Trying waaaaay to hard to be Grunge??? Hell, maybe the songs were written and stored since 1992??

it's alright,

Sponge's latest album The Man is just an average cd. I like the old Sponge lineup better. All I can really say is that overall The Man is better than their last album, For All The Drugs In The World.
