Not quite up to its potential,
By Stargrazer "the lost mixtape of my life" (deep in the heart of Michigan) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Man on Stilts (Audio CD)
Nice arrangements and great playing, but a little homogenous considering the possibilities of recording an "indie" instrumental album (in the Carolinas, no less) with such traditional instrumentation.
If you prefer Shark Quest's more elegaic, cinematic music (such as "Dancing Tooth" off the Oh, Merge compilation), you may want to check out their other records first.

Instrumental Talent Aligns Like Molecules of a Diamond,
By Audio Synesthete "Brogan" (UT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Man on Stilts (Audio CD)
This group is truly amazing. If I only had the breath to speak three words about this album before my lungs caved in, those three words would be: Steady, Simple, and Sturdy. In instrumental music, there is nothing to divert the listener's attention away from the talent of the musicians like vocals and clever lyrics that may be present in other genres. Seeing as how this is true, you'd think that with any instrumental band, you may hear the band fall slightly off beat, or miss a note. With this band, there's nothing but perfection down to the last metronomic click.
Each track in this album is long enough to enjoy the music, but short enough to hold the listener's interest until the next song plays. Compared to other albums by Shark Quest, this one seems to be a bit more upbeat. That's not to say that the music is dull and monotonous, because musically, this album is quite diverse. Each track sounds like it could be coming from a different band. This album makes me wish I had synesthesia. I would be smelling roses, seeing a kaleidoscope of colors, and tasting gourmet cuisine.
