The extraordinary sensory skills of dogs are often indispensable, but especially in search and rescue missions. In man-trailing, the dog’s sense of smell can be trained to find and follow vital human trails. With the aid of an object that is clearly scented with a missing person’s smell, the tracking dog can identify the correct trail among numerous human and environmental scents. Filled with the latest research and practice, this is a comprehensive manual on tracking and a fascinating insight into the dog’s unique sensory skills.

From the back cover:
Man-trailing represents a special application of (the dog's scenting) ability, one that is employeed frequently in the United States, but which until recently was used less often in Europe....With the aid of an object that carries a missing person's smell, the man-trailing dog can identify and follow the correct trail, among all the many smells of different people and the rest of the environment. Which dogs are best qualified for man-trailing, and how to teach it to them and put it into practice, is explained in this book. In this book: What is man-trailing? Which dog is best suited? Practical equipment. How the dog is trained. What the dog's behavior tells you. Christiane Liebeck was one of the first people in Germany to train her dogs for man-trailing, and to educate interested teams in this field. She has written this book with the aid of Robin and Kevin Kocher from the United States, both experienced man-trailers.

Despite its title, this is not a book about training bloodhounds. Indeed, there are only two or three photos of bloodhounds in the entire book! It's incredibly boring, basic and written in somewhat strange English (the author is German). The advice given is sometimes so obvious that you wonder who the book is directed at: "Give the dog water", "Reward the dog", etc. I don't think anybody can become a good man-trailer by reading this work. Let alone train bloodhounds.

I bought this as a gift to my brother in-law. He just got a new blood hound and he had a hard time finding any books on blood hounds. I noticed he looked at this book quite allot. I think he is pleased.
