Biography

Isaac Hayes is known to millions today as the original voice of Chef from South Park, but in the 60s he was a songwriter and session musician for Stax Records, and in the 70s a prominent and influential soul and funk singer.

As a songwriter, he notably wrote (with David Porter) "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Coming" for Sam & Dave. In 1968 he released his debut solo album, and then his masterpiece… Read more in Amazon's Isaac Hayes Store

5.0 out of 5 stars This is truly the best collection of Isaac Hayes' work!, October 14, 2004

This review is from: The Man!: The Ultimate Isaac Hayes 1969 - 1977 (Audio CD)
Isaac Hayes is a legend and rightfully so. His influence goes far beyond his time and even on to today's music. His voice is unmistakable; his lyrics are just as deep. He's an incredible composer; often his songs seem more like orchestral movements spanning 7 plus minuets. If you've only vaguely heard of Hayes, now is the time to see what you're missing and this is the place to start.

Unfortunately, as with most legends in this genre, Hayes' greatest hits albums can never capture the true essence of Hayes based only on the fact that not enough material is included. An even bigger mangling takes place when these greatest hits albums try to fit more material by cutting the original tracks short, sometimes completely in half!

Finally a collection has come along to break this mold. The Ultimate Isaac Hayes provides two disks of material and in addition features the original complete versions of all the tracks listed (with the exception on Do Your Thing which originally lasts 20 min and here is 4, short of adding a third disc they really couldn't do anything about this). But, really what more could you ask for?

Its not quite as extensive as a box set, but it will surly satisfy long time fans with the catalogue. In addition it's a perfect introduction to Isaac Hayes for anyone who might be interested. The liner notes are extensive and up to date, even giving insight on Hayes' current projects. It's certainly worth the import price and should be a staple for anyone starting a soul collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars bout time, December 31, 2011
where do you start with Isaac Hayes Musically? i mean the man had some of the baddest musical riffs and runs in songs that you are ever going to hear. his notes and the way he made his counters work are still mind-blowing, then you get arrangements which hit you in so many directions and yet become as one.

his voice was a Island all onto itself. he had a narrative and rap which was far more colder than alot of these rappers out now have.

his songs could and on this set uncut range into the 8 plus minute mark, however they are never dull or just there. the music he created and even his covers(he is a very underrated Cover Artist) have so much depth and power that they take a musical life all onto themselves.

this compilation was the man's peak and Prime. he was more than "Shaft" however even if Shaft was all he was known for and did, well that alone still makes him a Great Artist, because to me that Soundtrack is One of the very few that still holds up and that soundtrack is 40 years old, but the man's musicality and versatility and yet Soul never gets old.

this is a great place to start exploring what made Isaac Hayes truly one of the All Time Greats.
