4.0 out of 5 stars Man UP
I enjoyed this book, it does tell it like it is, no ifs ands or buts. It is time folks stopped blaming other folks, and took some responsibility on, and stepped up. We are out here, together, and we need to man up. NOBODY is coming to save us. The many voices that claim to speak for us, don't, their interests are not my interests, and more than likely not yours either. A...

2.0 out of 5 stars The Dream Can Still Live
Man Up has some wonderful points, however some of them are lost at times. The author spends a lot of time whining about problems that are prevalent in black society. Steve Perry does not provide a lot of solutions. The first couple of chapters are on point. The rest of the book reads like a research paper. If you are collecting data for a paper on why at risk students...

A book like this and many others like it needs far wider dissemination that it is getting. Enough of the sound bite mentality, self pity. Get up, stand up, and learn and do for yourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Manifesto for Manhood, May 13, 2007
This review is from: Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us (Paperback)
Man Up! will become required reading for black Americans (young & old) in the sphere of my influence. This book delivers truth, problems, realities, and common sense solutions to the ills of the ebony community. Where did the brother find the wisdom, inspiration, and most of all the courage to say what needs to be said? We are destroying ourselves and must take corrective action now. This book is a manifesto and valuable first steps reading to a positive living in the right direction.

This review is from: Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us (Paperback)
The book was very direct in confronting the issues that people of color struggle with on a daily basis. The book also brought out some strong points that need to be addressed immediately by all people.I found it to be a good read, and shared it with others that I know.

Steve Perry does an incredible job pointing to the REAL issues concerning our Black youth. He doesn't pull any punches as he challenges each and every institution and encourages them to "Man Up" and begin to take responsibility to try to save the next generations of Black men. Excellent book for anyone concerned about future cultural stability.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Courageous & Timely Call to Arms ... to those who ask: Why Me? It is now time to ask: Why Not?, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us (Paperback)
I wanted to read "Man Up: Nobody is Coming to Save Us" but never took the time until recently. I was cognizant of Steve Perry's reputation as principal and founder of The Preparatory Magnet School (in Hartford, Connecticut) and his commendable work preparing low income high school students for college. "Man Up", exposes raw nerves in the heart, head, and soul, of black communities across America. I suffered blunt force trauma while reading the author's views on black churches, high- profiled national leaders, and their part in maintaining the status quo. The truth hurts!

Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (June 1987) warned us in his book, "Family and Nation" ... about family disorganization, increasing numbers of impoverished preschool children, illegitimate births, and the destructive influences they had upon all communities in America. For his heroic efforts, he was excoriated by national leaders and branded a kook, hate -monger, and racist.

Unfortunately, his warnings were ignored and conflicts have increased exponentially in black communities all across America. "Man Up" takes up the mantle of exposing these problems ... as a reminder they are still alive, well, and destroying the fabric of black families. It is a precursor to similar warnings outlined in Bill Cosby's and Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint's controversial book, "Come on People: On the Path from Victims to Victors".

I found this exquisite book to be an inspiring read, well paced, and exceptionally informative. Those who point out flaws in editing, should not quibble with the appearance of the messenger, but should concentrate on the relevancy of the message. Man Up does more than just state what is wrong ... it provides realistic (but tough) solutions to the problems at hand.

If we are to take back our children, schools, and neighborhoods ... from thugs, drugs, and criminal scrubs; we must start at the source and do everything in our power to educate, motivate, and discourage young girls from having out of wedlock pregnancies. Illiterate children are not capable emotionally, financially, and intellectually... of coping with the challenges of rearing families. The author is correct when he states we should stop looking for saviors from without and accept personal responsibility and accountability ... if we are to remain viable as a community in the twenty first century. Join me, purchase this marvelous book, and support his call for action ... now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Credibility., July 26, 2006
This review is from: Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us (Paperback)
I am a 59 year old black male and Vietnam Vet. So far, I have only browsed through the book and I can't find the words to express how impressed with this young man Steve Perry. At first, I thought only Bill Cosby was the only black man to tell it like it is.
To borrow a phrase from Fannie Lou Hamer, " I am sick and tired of being sick and tired" of the poverty pimps i.e. Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, (hate monger) Farrakan, ( emperor/crackhead) Marion Barry) etc.)
Thank you very, very much Mr. Perry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Book! Now, we need action., September 4, 2007
This review is from: Man Up! Nobody is Coming to Save Us (Paperback)
I confess, I'm not much of a book worm, I tend to do most of my reading on-line -- This book, I read in two days!
The facts are clear; we in the black community are in crisis! My heart aches, wondering how we will correct the many issues that plague us.
Mr. Perry does an expert, incredibly honest job at pointing out both the issues and providing salient solutions.
It truly is up to us in the Black community to help ourselves. No more pointing fingers; no more relying on the same old broken methods of the past.
Well, this was supposed to be a book review. Bottom line, EVERY SINGLE black person
Should read take to heart the simple, but profound methods offered in this book. Well done Mr. Perry, keep up the important efforts.

A good look at the state of the black community. That needs to be addressed more publicly. This book is hard hitting and funny. I couldn't agree more. Only if we black people would stop acting like this is some little secret among us and come out against the distructive habits that have us in this position, we could start to turn our condition around. Keep telling the truth brother!!!
