Review

It is scarcely an overstatement to say that if this book were read, and heeded; by this epoch, the Gadarene Slide on which modern culture finds itself would be halted. That, of course, is a fond dream. The point, however, is that in this slender volume we find the authentic vision of what womanhood is. Dr. von Hildebrand takes us to the very substance of the ineffable mystery of gender. Like every mystery that pours into the Creation from the mind of God, it is solemn, noble, majestic, and blissful. How squalid, brutal, and ruinous appear the currently sovereign theories of femininity next to the protohistoric nay, eternal reality. And what a high pleasure the reading of the case is: we are guided along by a massively civilized tutor whose knowledge of philosophy, literature, music, history, Scripture, theology, and liturgy illumines the whole thing. --Thomas Howard

In the fifty years I have followed the teachings and writings of Alice Von Hildebrand, I can say that Man and Woman: A Divine Invention; is the greatest. Not only is it brilliant, masterful, beautiful, and deep, but it is also full of charming wit, linked to contemporary ideas and wonderful quotations from past and present writers. You will also find in Man and Woman: A Divine Invention; fresh illuminating ideas about motherhood, virginity, and the exclusion of women from the priesthood. Every woman should read Alice Von Hildebrand's book, and also give it to family members and friends. --Ronda Chervin, Holy Apostles College and Seminary of Connecticut

This book is a profound meditation on the superiority of being over bustling, of love over the impress of one's will, and of receptivity to God over what we take to be our creative ingenuity. As such it poses challenges to those creatures we call men and women, but in different ways. Dr. Von Hildebrand reminds men that, apart from the genius for the personal and the concrete that women possess, they become the architects of heresy and inhumanity. She reminds women, meanwhile, of their at once humble and high calling to motherhood, physical or spiritual. Every page presents us the distilled wisdom of Dr. Von Hildebrand's habit of thinking with the Church, and learning from the lives of her most glorious and humblest saints, especially Our Lady. It is a work steeped in the reverence she enjoins upon us all. --Anthony Esolen, Providence College, Rhode Island

Alice von Hildebrand's new book, "Man and Woman - a Divine Invention," lifts the mind and heart to God, who "invented" the two ways of being human: male and female. The book is a hymn to male-female complementarity: man and woman are equal but not identical. Man and woman mutually enrich each other. A man cannot be fully a man without a woman, and a woman cannot be fully a woman without a man. The book is profoundly theological, poetic, and well researched. I am happy I stumbled upon this small but marvelous book.

Dietrich von Hildebrand was known for his brilliance as a Catholic philosopher, ethicist, and prolific writer. His former student and, more importantly, wife has always been a noble intellectual equal to her late, great husband. Her work continually shows this reality.

Alice von Hilderband's newest book, "Man and Woman: A Divine Invention," examines the complexity of the human condition by delving into male and female complementarity. Von Hildebrand pursues this task through an exploration of the theological foundations of our human nature, as well as by observing the predominant cultural trends and ideologies which distort that nature. The book is eclectic and, in many ways, offers a bit of everything: from theology of the body to sexual ethics, to Mariology, to cultural criticism, to poignant reflections on motherhood, femininity, sanctity, and the priesthood, all offered by a first-rate Catholic philosopher. Von Hildebrand pulls no punches, firmly presenting herself, throughout the book, as an eloquent critic of modern feminism and a champion of Christian orthodoxy. This Belgian thinker offers an elegant critique of many ideological "isms," alongside feminism - including modernism, idealism, materialism, relativism, dualism, and subjectivism, all of which she finds detrimental to our spiritual development as human beings made in the image of God. Von Hildebrand's views are filled with reverent reflection and urgency, coming from a woman who has seen much in her lifelong intellectual journey as a teacher, a popular philosopher, and a devout Roman Catholic.

Read an article about Dr. Von Hildebrand's book. The article was very interesting and stimulated me to purchase the book. I knew I would enjoy the book.

Dr. Von Hildebrand is a scholar of our time, and perhaps in time will be deemed a Doctor of The Catholic Church. She writes in a style that is most comprehending and real. Her book is written for both men and women. I've read the book twice. Learned as much from the second reading, as I did from the first.

If you read this book, you'll certainly become a better person. You'll look upon yourself differently, and you'll most certainly look upon the other gender in a different light. More importantly you'll look and seek Our Lord with more intensity, reverence, respect, love, awe and wonder.

Words will never allow me to fully explain the impact this book has had on me. Read this book - IT CAN AND WILL CHANGE HOW YOU VIEW YOURSELF AND EVERYONE AROUND YOU. MANY THANKS DR. VON HIDEBRAND.

GOD IS VERY VERY GOOD TO HAVE GIVEN US ALICE VON HIDEBRAND !!!!!!!
