About the Author

Elliot Marple, reared in Seattle, graduated from Harvard College in 1929 and worked for New England newspapers through the Depression. He worked in the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C., during World War II, ultimately as press chief for price czar Chester Bowles.

On his return to Seattle in 1947, Marple set up a one-man news bureau for trade papers. Among others, he represented McGraw-Hill's Business Week magazine and Crain Communications' Advertising Age newspaper in Seattle from the 1940s through the 1970s. In 1949, Marple founded Marple's Business Roundup, a biweekly newsletter, as an outlet for his shoe-leather reporting on the economy of the Pacific Northwest. The newsletter was subsequently renamed Marple's Business Newsletter and continues to this day.

Marple retired in the 1980s, but continues to write and edit.
