Editorial Reviews

Bla is the second-oldest son of Hawaiian music and slack key legend Gabby "Pops" Pahinui. As a former member of the Sunday Manoa, The Gabby Band and the Pahinui Brothers, Bla perpetuates his family's heartfelt commitment to Hawaiian music. On this, his first solo slack key recording, Bla draws upon mana (spiritual power of soul), when performing his original instrumentals, unique interpretations of Hawaiian favorites, and Mainland oldies. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars In his own right, May 13, 2006

Bla has one of the most unique and pleasing voices! His soulful renditions of some slack key classics amaze me. You can, of course, hear some of his father, Gabby Pahinui, in him. But, Bla's renditions raise the barre even higher. There is much emotion in his singing. His slack key picking has a unique sound based upon playing left handed and upside down, so he uses his thumb for the notes and his fingers for the bass rythyms. A must addition to any slack key afficianado's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bla rocks but you cannot spell, August 4, 2000

Instrumental is the correct spelling of the word. Tried to submit a correction but the format didn't fit my concern. You folks have "instramental" all over this listing. For a book and music seller, that's way uncool. On the subject of Bla, well, I live in Hawaii and he is an icon. If you love slack-key, or any really good guitar, this is your man. And Hawaiian music is good for the soul. Aloha!
