About the Author

Barry Barclay, Pakeha and Ngati Apa, is a film director and writer best known for Tangata Whenua (1974), the landmark television series about Maori life and culture, and for his prizewinning feature film, Ngati (1985). HIs most recent films are The Feathers of Peace (2000) and The Kaipara Affair (2005). He is also author of Our Own Image (1990), on indigenous filmmaking within a majority culture, and articles and chapters on matters relating to the representation of indigenous cultures.
