The content of the book overall is well thought out and easy to read. Chapter 1, The Evolution of Managed Care, is an excellent chapter. The Medicaid and Medicare sections of Chapter 5 are excellent. Chapter, 7, Quality of Care, is an excellent chapter--one of the best on quality I've read. (reviewed by Carmella M. Sebastian, MD, Senior Medical Director, First Priority Health, The Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania HMO)

The book covers the basics in an understandable and logical order...it is well-organized and complete. Chapter 3, The Infrastructure of Managed Care, is very interesting and informative - is very good at describing how managed care organizations do what they do. Chapter 4, Provider Networks, and Chapter 5, Purchasers and Managed Care, are very good chapters with good descriptions of provider networks and purchasing arrangements. (Reviewed by Bernard J. Turnock, MD, MPH, Professor and Director of Community Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Illinois at Chicago.)

I actually got this book for a class that I am taking. I bought it new thinking that I would be writing and highlight in it like a overachiever that I am, but interestingly enough that wasn't the case. The book was great if you knew how the medical system in the U.S. works but I could see people outside of their element with this book. Managed Care is a hard theory to get your head wrapped around if you have never worked in the healthcare field and don't understand what goes on "behind the scenes" for that doctor or that Physician Assistant does to actually see you in a hospital or doctor's office. It's a fairly think book for the major concepts introduced and some of the descriptions and definitions were a bit hard to understand due to their vagueness. I do refer back to it mostly for class but it's a good book.

Really helped with my project. Some information though is kind of vague but having this textbook as my guide really made my group's class presentation work. It would be nice if this book was used in the class.

great book ,good information to obtain more info in the topic, but still needs other books to complement it..the wording is a little confusing and goes around the bushes without giving you a clear definition of thre topic at hand...but in general ...a ok book with good information on different topics related to managed care.

I purchased this textbook because it was required for my economic (Masters) class. This is book is relatively easy to read and understand. It is a good reference book and one that I shall keep for the future. If you are interested in economics or an economic major, this is a good resource, provided you work in healthcare.

For someone entering the managed care arena, this book is an excellent primer. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know the basics of managed care. See also the author's fourth edition, which I have ordered and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.

small book but carries a lot of information about managed care. although this may be changing within the next few years because of the obamacare, this is still a good book to read about the history of managed care.
