Great Q&A guide for passing this DANTES exam,

Using this Q & A book and two of the reference books DANTES recommends, I passed this test and acquired 3 more upper level credits. My score scaled to an "A" (with Regents College). If you need to pass this DANTES test, get this book.

Helpful enough to pass,

If you've got a little background, then this book reinforces your knowledge, and then some. But don't count on acing the test if you're tapping into this subject for the first time. Allow yourself a week to go through the book bit by bit. It can be overwhelming if you choose to cram. And like everything else, get a good night sleep the night prior to your test, and you'll do much better for sure.

Dated But Helpful,

This book is worth buying as part of your overall study package. It is neither all inclusive nor full current. Annual "marketecture" brings us new concepts constantly. Don't count on it as the sole source.

Outdated Info - Hard To Follow,

This book includes a number of random multiple choice questions. In fact, that is all it includes. There is no feedback as to why 'answer A' is the correct choice. The information is outdated and uses obsolete wording. Took the test, passed with flying colors but it wasn't because of this book! Learned more from one of the CLEP recommended websites than the questions included in the text. If Amazon had a Zero Star rating, this book would get it from me.

I just took and passed the DSST MIS exam today (Feb 2010). I work in IT, so this is my professional field, and I didn't think I needed much study. I bought the book thinking I would test myself to be sure I wasn't wrong!
The questions in the book were probably good in 1995, but anything in the computer field moves quickly, and even the fundamentals can change. The questions in this book are woefully out of date. I thought I would have trouble with the test if it was based on 1995 technology and ideas, but the test is based on mostly current and perfectly valid technology and concepts. That makes this book a COMPLETE waste of time and money. It will lead you down the wrong path. I strongly recommend anyone find a better set of sample questions if you think you need them. If you are a developer, network guy, business analyst, system analyst, or DBA by trade, and you have a couple of years experience and a bit of a clue, my suggestion is to just go take the test. I thought the test was fair, and as long as you've had exposure to the things that go on in a large IT organization, you'll do just fine. The test is definately looking for breadth of knowledge, not depth. If you are not one of the above, then you'll probably need to do some studying. Don't use this book as a study guide. The questions have been completely superceded by the pace of technology, and the test has definately been updated since this book was published. Seriously. |
