Book Description

May 30, 2001
Financials alone don't make an M&A deal work. Equally important is what's behind them--an organization's people. How to understand this reality and benefit from it is the thrust of this unusually comprehensive, practical, readable, but conceptually rigorous book. Daniel and Metcalf see HR executives as change agents during the delicate maneuverings before a deal is done, and then after, when it's time to tackle the fine-grained problems of integrating disparate corporate cultures and the people who vitalize them. They examine the recent and ongoing waves of mergers and acquisitions across industries, setting them in the broader context of organizational change. With concepts, theory, and real-life examples drawn from their long, impressive experience as consultants and executives, Daniel and Metcalf provide step-by-step guidance through the stages common to all corporate combinations. They define and explain the roles to be played in the process by HR professionals and executives elsewhere in the organization, and show how, by interacting productively with each other, they will thus maximize the total contribution to the success of any corporate transaction.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“...provides an excellent guide for human resource practioners who may be involved in, an organization merger or aquisition. Recommendations are backed up with clear rationale, and although "hard core practioners" may find the book too theoretical, the liberal use of examples and case studies makes the book a worthwhile guide for managing people in mergers and aquisitions.”–Personnel Psychology

By A Customer
This review is from: The Management of People in Mergers and Acquisitions (Hardcover)
This was an very comprehensive overview of the entire area of mergers & acquisitions, written in easy-to-read terms. It covered not only the HR side of doing deals, but also included information about leadership, employee communications, merging compensation and pay systems, and retaining talent. The book also has an extensive appendix with "how to" documents included which will make the jobs of many HR professionals much easier in the future. This is a book written for many different types of professionals- from executives to lawyers to HR professionals to internal communicators.

By A Customer
This review is from: The Management of People in Mergers and Acquisitions (Hardcover)
This book covers the full scope of Merger & Acquisition work from A to Z. It would be useful for lawyers or HR professionals or execs who want to get the people side of things right. Filled with real-life examples and forms. I wish I had had this book when I was going through my first deal- it gives you a good overview of what to expect and is written in plain English.
