Book Description

First and foremost, the emphasis of this managerial accounting text is decision making as opposed to number crunching. Additionally, this text is unique in its first-person, discovery learning approach using a 4-step decision-making model throughout. It truly conveys a management perspective, by including coverage of topics such as ABM, the value chain, and balanced scorecard evaluation techniques. It is also the first managerial text to incorporate coverage on knowledge management (Ch. 13), highlighting the latest developments for improved managerial decision making.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I found the examples interesting, complete, and not overly simplified, while not being so complex that students become lost in them. They were very well prepared and well written.

The Ethics boxes in particular caught my interest. They all contained scenarios unlike the usual ethical problems in textbooks, where the dilemma is almost obvious, and the students can (very self righteously) say that "of course" they'd do the right thing.

I like the changes to the exercises section. It seems there are plenty of small exercises that demonstrate the key learning objectives.

The 4-Step Decision Model is an excellent tool for developing my students' critical thinking skills while solving end-of-chapter problems. They can apply their hands-on experience using the model in other college classes and in their careers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh..., July 15, 2007

Leicester Dedlock (Ames, IA United States) - See all my reviews
This book is essentially an introductory managerial accounting book which purports to be an undergraduate text but is really at a high school level. As promised, it has an "easy-to-understand presentation" and uses a "hands-on learning approach". The book is clear in its presentation, it does a good job at providing plenty of easy-to-read tables, and it uses plenty of real-world applications as examples. However, it is extremely lacking in depth. Instead of providing you with a large quantity of useful, practical information, it gives you a small amount of that information and just a taste of what the field is about. After I finished it, I was left with an idea of what Managerial Accounting is about, but I was still rather ignorant regarding the details. I wouldn't recommend for professors to use this as a main textbook in any class, but it might work as a "suggested reading" for students who are having some difficulty with the more depthful textbook that you should be using.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Customer Service in the End, October 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was in a pinch when I ordered this book. I needed it for a class that was starting within a week. The issue was I thought I already had the right book for my class. A week before class one of my cohort members showed me their book and I discovered I had the wrong one due to a recent book change. I placed the order for this book (the correct one), communicated that I needed the book ASAP (and paid for expedited shipping), contacted the dealer direct and let her know the situation. A book arrived but it was not the one that I ordered. Not even close to the subject or author that I ordered. They picked the incorrect one by mistake. I contacted the dealer, explained the situation via email which was frustrating that there was no phone number and asked that the correct one get mailed immediately. She did oblige and I received my book after the class started. Luckily the first assignment that was due the first day of class was postponed to the second week. The good news is I got the correct book eventually, just not when I wanted it. The bummer is I did not get any discount for shipping or anything.

Sent me a different edition than what was advertised. Will never use amazon.com for textbooks ever again. I can find them cheaper at other places anyway. You all need to get your editions straight and stop selling the wrong ones.
