From the Back Cover

Make smart business decisions!

Recognizing that most students will become managers, and not accountants, Jiambalvo’s Managerial Accounting, Second Edition focuses on the knowledge and skills that managers need to make good business decisions. Students and instructors alike have praised the clear and concise writing style – discussions are to the point, ideas are illustrated, and examples are presented to make the ideas concrete.

Here’s how it works:

1. Present a new business decision-making framework.
Every chapter is linked to decision making with a feature called Making Business Decisions. The feature has a Knowledge and Skills Checklist that you can use off the concepts and techniques that you’ve learned in the chapter.

2. Emphasizes two key themes.
Jiambalvo focuses on two key themes that will help you in the business world: Incremental Analysis (the analysis of the differences in revenue and in costs between decision alternatives) and You Get What You Measure! (performance measures greatly influence the behaviors of managers).

3. Provides clear, current, and concise coverage.
The text addresses a wide number of current and emerging topics in managerial accounting, such as the balanced scorecard and economic value added (EVA). New chapters cover Variable Costing, Pricing Decisions, and Analyzing Financial Statements.

4. Connects concepts and techniques to the real world.

  • New examples relate concepts to service companies.
  • Links to Practice boxes relate the text material to real companies.
  • Cases in each chapter promote critical and applied thinking.

5. Includes a state-of-the-art CD-ROM and Web site, featuring:

  • Videos with real managers.
  • Self-Tests and other study tools.
  • Demonstrations of important concepts and techniques.
  • Additional cases that require you to use your managerial accounting knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally reading a managerial accounting book is fun, February 18, 2006
This review is from: Managerial Accounting (Hardcover)
I love this book. The illustrations are great and the text is easy to follow. Jiambalvo helps the reader to build a bridge over the chasm between theory and real life applications.

The book has just the right length. Not too elaborate and not too concise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Managerial Accounting, February 18, 2006

Overall the book is ok. The author can be confusing at time, and the answers to practice problems are not in the back of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very clear accounting book !, August 28, 2005
By
This review is from: Managerial Accounting (Hardcover)
This College/MBA level book does have something in common with books in the 'For Dummies' series: It provides very clear explanations, of essential concepts. In addition it is well illustrated with clear, to the point, useful diagrams and illustrations that are worth "a thousand words".

Having read other accounting texts such as Horngren's books, this book is great as an introduction, for overview, or for review of managerial accounting concepts. It provides clear definitions of terms and concepts. It helps to understand and implement concepts. And, it gives practical examples how decision making is affected by incremental costs, and by what you measure.

This is not a basic or simple text. It explains Managerial Accounting very well. A CD with case demonstrations livens the adds to its modern format. The fact that James Jiambalvo, through his clarity, style and organization, manages to make important accounting concepts appear so clear and simple, is a credit to his style.

This is a great accounting book.
