This text gives a working knowledge of mathematical techniques available to model, solve and analyze real-world problems on spreadsheets that may arise in a work environment. The traditional management science topics are incorporated, with the use of electronic spreadsheets to layout the model on templates provided to the student to solve the problem. Business and industrial problems are introduced, with a solution technique that follows - identified by an icon or boldface type. Cases require the use of more than one model to analyze the situation, asking both managerial and mathematical questions. Exercises and cases intend for students to form teams of 2-4 people, encouraging labour division and co-ordination, "check it out" boxed features appear throughout the text to give students to input their results.

5.0 out of 5 stars The firepower of Excel unleashed for business decisionmaking, August 25, 2000
This review is from: Managerial Spreadsheet Modeling and Analysis (Irwin Series in Quantitative Methods and Management Science.) (Hardcover)
Dr. Hesse unlocks the firepower of Excel for Quantitative Analysis purposes. Using combinations of functions and functionality, he shows you how to perform decision analysis, linear programming and a host of other advanced business decision tools using the same simple spreadsheet platform that most people use for simple addition. True, it may not be the EASIEST read in the world, but using Dr. Hesse's methods could save you from purchasing dedicated analysis software that you may not need. DEFINITELY worth a look...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for excel management solutions, March 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Managerial Spreadsheet Modeling and Analysis (Irwin Series in Quantitative Methods and Management Science.) (Hardcover)
I read Mr. Rick Hesse's book (600+ pages) in a week or two. The book contains a wealth of very useful models and methods for effectively using Excel as a management / decision tool.
The book was published in 1996 (14 years ago) but is still a good buy if you can get it second hand. The methods employed are likely to be relevant also for the next 14 years to come or more!
