5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for specific need, January 28, 2009
By Wes Stahler (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Managing Active Directory with Windows PowerShell does exactly what the title states. This is one of the first PowerShell books that are exclusively focused on a specific topic. This is a great trend in that it demonstrates the breadth of what PowerShell can do. I know that there are other titles coming that will focus on VM, Exchange, etc.

As a previous reviewer stated, this should not be your first PowerShell book (if you are an AD admin, it should be your second). If you are new to PowerShell, take a look at PowerShell In Action or Windows PowerShell V1.0: TFM, 2nd Edition. Either of these titles will give you more than enough knowledge to work through Managing Active Directory.

Jeff does a great job of dividing up typical Active Directory functions (User, Computer and Group account management) and demonstrates how to automate them through the use of PowerShell scripting. In addition to covering the .NET directory service classes, Jeff introduces the Quest Active Directory cmdlets. The plethora of examples he gives (he often demonstrates both Quest Active Directory cmdlets and the use of .NET classes) cover virtually every facet of AD management.

This is a title that has saved me time on numerous occasions. If you are a fan of PowerShell and manage or script with Active Directory, this title needs to be on your desk.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners, January 27, 2009
By S. Sheikh (Chicago, USA) - See all my reviews

Jeff Hicks is a great mentor, but this book is not for PowerShell beginners. This book assumes a lot of pre-knowledge about PowerShell Functions, psbase, and ADSI in general. If you are an AD admin who would like to hit the ground running with PowerShell to Manage your AD then you must read a PowerShell book before gettings your hands on this one.
