Book Description

People who suffer from addictive disorders present an incredible challenge to therapists. This book offers hope and specific techniques designed to address the complexity of treatment. Dr. F. Michler Bishop stresses the need for therapists to be flexible, to recognize that different people have different needs, and to consider a variety of perspectives. Cognitive, emotive, behavioral, and spiritual modalities are presented with rich clinical detail.
Addressing not only substance abuse, but also shopping, eating, gambling, and sexual behaviors, the book considers such issues as assessment, denial, dual diagnosis, anxiety, shame and guilt. The change process is described in various stages and therapists are reminded that patients need to move through the process, stop the process, and even go into reverse many times before they reach their treatment goals. Of particular interest is the advice he gives on working with non-motivated patients. In contrast to the confrontational, aggressive approach that has been advocated by addictions specialists in the past, Dr. Bishop suggests that therapist confrontations increase the probability of relapse. He recommends that traditional psychodynamic techniques of being empathetic, avoiding argumentation, and supporting self-efficacy are more effective with people’s addiction behaviors. Specific methods for special populations, such as mandated clients or those with serious psychological problems, are also presented in this comprehensive, optimistic, and well-organized volume.

Editorial Reviews

Review

An outstanding book on the treatment of addictions, including the treatment of disturbed feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, and other personality problems that often accompany addiction. I can think of no other book on addiction that so thoroughly presents the use of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Use it to your great advantage! (Ellis, Albert Ph.D )

Finally, there is a clear exposition of a comprehensive clinical approach to the treatment of addictive behaviors and associated psychological problems. One of the key strengths of this book is that it presents an integrated treatment approach as an overarching model that therapists can use as a guide as they help their clients manage or overcome their addictions. It also provides an integrated approach to the treatment of co-occuring disorders for clients who have both addictions and other psychological problems that are often reciprocally interrelated. The addictive behaviors field owes a debt of gratitude for Dr. Bishop's seminal contribution, which represents the cutting edge of the emerging paradigm shift in addiction treatment. (G. Alan Marlatt, Ph.D )

This timely book is a breath of fresh air and will be welcome reading by those in the addictions field. Numerous clinical cases are sprinkled throughout the text and provide excellent examples of how to apply the cognitive-behavioral treatment model. Dr. Bishop, himself a scientist-practitioner, has provided the field with a balanced blend of science and clinical practice that will be of use to health care practitioners and researchers alike. (Linda C. Sobell, Ph.D., ABPP )

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent book, March 7, 2002
By
This review is from: Managing Addictions: Cognitive, Emotive, and Behavioral Techniques (Hardcover)
This book is more complete than I thought! In my modest opinion it's magnificent. It has a great practical value and will be very helpful in my work as therapist. And it's exactly the kind of help I was looking for! This publication will be a guidance not only for me but for all of my coworkers here in my province, since I'll make sure that this useful work and his author be of everyone's knowledge.
I am a cuban psychologist working in a clinic for foreign drug dependence patients. This work has enriched our experience and it has been of great help. It combines successfully both Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and addiction. I recommend it to every therapist working in this field, including those from Latin American countries. Some of my colleagues who have already read it as well as me, have commented about the values of this book, that is, for all of us, a masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for all mental health professionals!, April 26, 2004

This review is from: Managing Addictions: Cognitive, Emotive, and Behavioral Techniques (Hardcover)
As a master's level, state credentialed substance abuse counselor that has been in the field for over 15 years, I found Bishop's book to be one of the best texts that I have read in my career on addiction counseling, treatment and recovery. Bishop elegantly synthesizes the often conflicting models of abstinence based/12 step recovery and harm reduction. He very pragmatically values both perspectives and guides the practitioner in finding what works best for his or her individual client. I can honestly say that this book provided me with a much needed professional epiphany and I will keep it within easy reach for reference purposes for as long as I practice my profession. I highly recommend this book to anyone that works with substance abusing clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scientific Approach to the Treatment of Addictive Behavior, October 17, 2001
By
J Richard Crossfield, LMHC (Jacksonville, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Managing Addictions: Cognitive, Emotive, and Behavioral Techniques (Hardcover)
Managing Addictions: Cognitive, Emotive, and Behavioral Techniques by F. Michler Bishop, Ph.D., CAS provides professionals with a current, research-proven, and clinically pertinent model for the treatment of addictive behavior. Dr. Bishop expertly integrates the techniques of various Cognitive Behavioral Therapies with the Stages of Change Model. This allows the therapist to conceptualize the cognitive aspect of addictive behavior (beliefs, assumptions, distortions, etc.) and match interventions to the client's readiness to change those behaviors.

Dr. Bishop offers up-to-date research on addiction, emotional disorders, treatment efficacy, and behavioral change processes. He includes clinical vignettes illustrating real world application of various techniques. Numerous resources are provided throughout the text. The chapters addressing dual diagnosis are outstanding.

This book is an essential clinical tool for all mental health professionals. Managing Addictions: Cognitive, Emotive, and Behavioral Techniques is an important contribution to the art and science of psychotherapy.
